My fandom's new OT3 makes me feel...jealousy

I'm a little surprised by this.

So, I know F!S generally doesn't like Rogue One or Andor, but I do, and that's what this is about. I've been a head-over-heels whacked out Jyn/Cassian shipper since RO came out (nearly 7 years ago! What??). I can't let go of them. I've written more words of fanfiction for them than for every other ship I've ever had combined. I'm not sure I could explain why it is that I'm so, so into them, but...well, I am. And my ardor shows no sign of abating.

Despite the above nonsense, I don't think I fully understood the deranged depths of my attachment until just recently. Andor has given rise to the Cassian/Melshi ship, which I do not pay attention to, partially because M/M slash has never been my bag (although I'm totally down for F/F slash! Vel/Cinta is my show ship of choice); partially because the two of them have Bro Energy rather than Couple Energy to me; and partially because, eh, I ship Cassian with Jyn. But, you know -- ship and let ship.

Well! Enter a New Thing! A segment of my fellow Jyn/Cassian shippers have decided to meld the two ships. There is now Jynmelshian, the Jyn/Melshi/Cassian polycule OT3. As a general rule, I am not opposed to OT3s or polycules. But this, I have a visceral, jealous reaction to.

I am fascinated! Here I am, still obsessed with two characters who died 6 and a half years ago, and I see a third crawl into their bed, and my lizard brain goes, "NO! BE GONE, YOU INTERLOPER! THIS IS A ONE PENIS RELATIONSHIP!" I can only conclude that this means that I have some sort of parasocial thing going on with this ship, which is probably not...great.

On the other hand, if I could see some sort of sexual or romantic chemistry between Melshi and Cassian, would things be different? Is it that Melshi is getting in the way of my ship, or is it that I just can't see him and Cassian ever fucking? Cassian reads extremely, extremely het to me. If I saw bi potential in him, would my reaction instead be, "...hmmmmmmmmmmm?"

There's no point to this. I'm just thinking out loud.

I get that way for my OTPs until I've basically read through all the fics I can find. Then I can start to consider OT3s and different pairings. But until then, I don't even wanna see them.

AYRT

Maybe my problem is that the fics haven't stopped coming yet! And, well...I also write them, which means they can theoretically never stop on my end.

But I've been thinking about it a bit more since I rambled above, and I think it's ultimately a characterization thing. I don't think I can actually ship something if the characterization doesn't make sense to me, and it really, really doesn't in this case.

I'm a hardcore monoshipper, so basically every rival ship (or OT3 or poly ship involving my OTP) is a major NoTP for me. I don't think there's anything cringey or wrong about feeling that way. It's only a problem if one bashes said rival ships, or is otherwise incapable of keeping their feelings in check.

I also don't think that feeling jealous of rival ships is necessarily any more parasocial that shipping already is anyway.

Thirdly, quite a bit of the disliking of Andor over the last few months has been one person specifically, so I don't necessarily think it's accurate to say that F!S as a whole generally dislikes Rogue One and Andor. It's not super popular by any means, but at least two of us LOVE it, which is honestly more love than plenty of fandoms get from the comm.

I'm a big slash shipper, but Cassian reads pretty het to me, too. I think I could probably get behind a bit of a "Cassian is pan and takes whatever sexual opportunities present themselves to him" interpretation of the character, but I tend to see him as pretty strongly favoring women at least.

Nah, I don't think it's parasocial/unhealthy necessarily, I just think we're all here with different tastes and different ways we respond to stuff that rubs us wrong.

I have a LOT of ships I'm heavily OTP about. Sometimes I see content for competing ships and scroll by without feeling bothered, other times I find it viscerally upsetting... you're not at fault for having a *feeling*, just for how you treat other fans.

So, like, I'm a big fan of A/B, where A/C and B/D are also popular ships. A/C upsets me deeply because of how I personally relate to A, but I have friends who multiship, and if they share a piece of A/C fanart or the like, I just scroll by as fast as I can. I would hate if B/D was endgame, but in my circles I don't see a *lot* of multishipping, and even the people I know who like ot3s that feature both B and D are of the opinion that it should be fanon fun rather than canon reality.

In another fandom, I've been deeply into A/C forever, and A/D is a very recent competing ship. A good friend likes both, I just have to remove myself from discussions of A/D entirely because something about it sets me off.

And in another fandom, B/D is my thing, but I'm not bothered by A/B and B/C and in fact the *long* list of ships B's in... and under the right circumstances I can enjoy some of them, but on some days I'll be in a mood where A/B just strikes me as WRONG and it's on me to step away from that content.
