I mean, generally most people want to make their main areas of fannish interest known up front, in order to help fans with shared interests find them, and also help fans who don't share their interests decide whether to hang around or not.

Also, if someone has a controversial ship then they're probably going to want to make that known up front so as to avoid being followed by anyone who may not be comfortable with that ship.

And thirdly, some people are in fandom primarily for one single ship. That's not a red flag, it's a perfectly valid way that some people do fandom.
