Disagreeing with critics

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-08-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
What was the last thing you watched that you disagreed with the general consensus on, either thought it was better or worse than the reviews, general opinions thought?

The SNW musical episode. I hated it.

Only good musical episode in a non-musical show is the Buffy one. Every single one since has been terrible.

Well I actually liked Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. I thought it was a great fun movie.

Yes! Loved it. Also confused by the reviews calling it depressing or saying the ending was depressing. What? There were some sad elements, but the ultimate feel to me was hopeful.

I strongly agree!

People say that it's gotten funny again, and I believe them (I haven't watched myself)

But some of the middle-era seasons were really really bad.

Never saw Quiet Place, but I totally agree on Arrival. So overrated.

Are you the "linguist" who hated Arrival because we can't not take everything literally?

A Quiet Place is awful and I was horrified to see there was a sequel. Yuck!

I think we discussed hating Quite Place like two times. And I still stand by it. Awful movie

Recently rewatched Dante's Peak (28% on Rotten Tomatoes), and it's a pretty solid movie. It's not a cinematic masterpiece or anything, but it's at least on par with Volcano (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), which I also liked. But then critics don't seem to much like disaster movies (though audience scores are pretty low too). And Peppermint (13% on Rotten Tomatoes) was a good revenge action movie.

I was not very impressed with Violent Night (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), though I do give points for the very apt title. It wasn't terrible or anything, just not anywhere near as entertaining as other people seem to have found it. I also was not really impressed by The Fablemans (92% on Rotten Tomatoes). It felt more maudlin than touching and I'm usually a fan of Spielbergian sentiment.

I HATED the ending of The Good Place and I actually didn't mind the ending of How I Met Your Mother.

Also, I don't get the hype of Game of Thrones.

Jury Duty (reality show on Amazon Freevee). Multiple people I know IRL have raved about it and apparently it got good critical buzz, too, but I could not get into it. Aside from the deception angle, most of the "humor" is just unfunny and meanspirited.

Am I being oversensitive? =/

Not a recent movie but EVERY critic seems to love Days of Heaven. I think it was probably the most boring movie I've ever seen.

There is a lot of gushing about Final Fantasy XVI. I think it does not look great. Sure, some cut scenes are nice but the character models and movements look dated at best. The characters are okay but Jill is a complete non-entity and the beach romance scene was so deeply cringey (most romances or hinted romances were, but that's Final Fantasy for you).

I can't think of any super recently.

I strongly dislike the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, though--very much including the second one--which goes heavily against popular opinion.

I hate the camp. I hate the melodrama even more. I hate Toby's Peter, who is one of the most egregious limp-noodle sad-sack characters I've ever seen on screen. I hate how Toby plays him, but I hate how he's written even more. I hate the downright comedic lack of subtlety with which the narrative heaps misfortune after misfortune on him, and how utterly un-proactive he is in just letting the world shit on him, and how much it feels like I'm supposed to have a massive martyr complex and therefore relate to him and pop a validation boner every time yet another bad thing happens to him, as I revel in his "noble suffering" or whatever. But actually he's just a perpetual buttmonkey who I can't take seriously or even feel bad for because the narrative is so blatantly trying to make me feel bad for him every. single. moment.
