I wish the M*A*S*H show hadn't had Frank Burns be a cheat in his medical exams. It weakened the character and the comedy. You don't have to bend over backwards to make a character be the antagonist. The show was stronger when Frank was loathsome on his own terms and in the show's own period. Having him be a lazy and careless surgeon was more than enough, without building that into his backstory. Previously he'd graduated bottom of the middle third, meaning he could be competent if he'd just take more time. And that made his incompetence worse, being a cheat made it almost excusable.
