Well today I learned. I'm a regular hiker and have never heard of that and don't carry anything like it with me. Thanks for the info!

Taking the search out of Search and Rescue.

Remember to buy insurance if you carry one, because once you hit the button or pull the pin, you WILL be billed by the government for your rescue from that second on. That is tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of dollars that it'll cost you if you don't have rescue insurance. But at least you'll be alive to go broke.

It is also a Federal Offense to activate one for anything other than a life of death emergency. They are serious about that too, so don't hit the button if you just feel a bit tired or lost a hiking pole.

I mean, considering he is very much dead, it's pretty safe to assume it would have been a life or death situation. Seeing as it ended in death and death.

We'd moved onto General advice at this point, my saddo pedant friend.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Irrelevant. It was a life or death situation in this special case which means that yes, shocker, life or death situations may occur and it would be good to have this device in a case like that. Your concern trolling/fearmongering is pretty silly considering that yes, it can save your damn life even though it might be expensive (for which there are solutions nowadays and really, considering US hospital bills, it's not that bad).

I don't really think they were trolling, just offering some additional pointers for people who may want to get that type of device.

I'd have never thought to take out insurance on it. Now, if I decide to get one, I'll know to do so. Anon has helped at least this one hiker!

You of all people are accusing someone else of trolling? You little overly literal shit stirrer? You knew exactly what was being talked about, and decided to interpret it in the narrowest possible way. Fuck the fuck off to fuckville you dumb fuck.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody is trolling, except maybe you. It is simply thread drift happening
