(Anonymous) 2023-08-18 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)"Effort went into making this" does not mean it's morally defensible to demand money for doing it. When I make things, I want them to get to people who want them. Not just to the narrow subset of humans who have money to throw around. If you're to old or too young or too unemployed or whatever to have someone paying you, but you appreciate fic or art or music or anything else that can be passed around on the internet, you are my intended audience. And that used to be true of fandom as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 04:29 am (UTC)(link)I was responding to the argument you made before, which was that "effort" in fandom should be rewarded with money. Now you're trying to shift to "money went into these enamel pins, so I should charge for them."
And my problem is, a decade or two ago, if I wanted to avoid people badgering me about fanmerch-selling I had zero interest in, all I had to do was skip events with vendor's tables. While the online spaces where fans hung out were overflowing with free tutorials and people who had tons of experience making all kinds of stuff, and were happy to teach and learn and be well away from whatever they did or didn't do professionally.
At that point, if you had more money than time, there might be someone who would take money, and if you had the interest in knowing how it was done, fandom had your back. That seems like a much fairer choice to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 07:11 am (UTC)(link)And again, by you logic, nobody should ever be allowed to sell stuff they learned to make through free tutorials. That's really stupid.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 02:40 am (UTC)(link)If they're selling stuff featuring intellectual property that isn't theirs, then no, they should not be allowed to sell it. I don't see how this is hard.
Make your own original enamel pins that don't have fandom characters on them and sell those.
