Ty Knotts mispronounces a lot of place names. I'm not sure if it's deliberate but the recent secret that suggested some Youtubers do this for engagement certainly has me wondering.

Which rural America? Alaska? Upstate New York? A farmhouse outside Providence? Texas? Even Jersey has rural pockets, come on, name the states here.

quietly sits over here in the "willing to take a 2-5 hour road trip to any one of dozens of cons in this region" corner. yall, please calm down. what OP assumes is not as unreasonable as some of you are making it out to be. is it 15 hours from here to DragonCon? Of course, but DragonCon is also 75K people and thousands of dollars in hotel costs, people who go there make it a yearly vacation destination. That's not the every other weekend jaunt OP is talking about. If you live in the central midwest you can get to...quick count...30 not-tiny conventions from Minneapolis to Columbus over the course of the year in less than 6 hours' drive, depending on where you are. As big as GenCon and as small as Anime Iowa. I've done as many as 8 in one year without leaving a tri-state region. Which was a lot, but I was young and capable of packing hotel rooms to save mmoney.

We really do have it good in fandom terms. I get you, OP. I wish I could tell you that all the cons suck and people are weird but we know that's not true. The only sad reality is that we still tend to spend most of our fandom time online and don't have near as many fandom friends to go meet as we'd like to. And when you get older, even the ones across the city are too busy with kids and jobs to meet up at the local arcade bar. I guess that's just life everywhere.

I'm not supposed to see Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock.) The first time an airline folded after we'd booked tickets. The second time I got shingles. The third time - well, let's say there's family crap going on. Sigh. I'd really like to see the heart of the nation.

I heard they were just cousins, was that only in the dub?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if you're driving from Boston to Buffalo, it takes, like, 6 1/2 hours (without the going through Providence). If you're driving from Jackson, Mississippi to New York City, it takes 17. If you're driving from Miami, Florida to New York City, it takes 18. If you're driving from St. Paul, Minnesota (which I didn't realize most of was east of the Mississippi) to New York City, it takes 16 1/2. Weirdly, if you're not in the small close together states, it could take a while.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
this. i used to live in a small town and i could still easily get to probably 15 good-sized conventions in less than a five-hour drive, which to me is completely reasonable.

I honestly don't know why this is a thing? Is it a thing?

Outside individual random comments here or there on the pronunciations being wrong, I think the internet in general understands regional/international accents, especially in regards to English being the most spoken language, is a thing.

Like, Dom Noble has apologized plenty of times for not being able to pronounce words and names correctly, especially non-English words/names.

Intentional or not, the Youtubers aren't tricking fans or lying or being devious? They're just not pronouncing it to your liking or being as professional as you want them to be. But like...IDK man, that's a you thing.

I'm not going to leave long corrections on a Jarvis Johnson video about going into the Meta-verse because he possibly on purpose mispronounced some word. Nor am I going to wonder if he did it on purpose or on accident or if he just didn't know the correct pronunciation?

Like, IDK man, even if they purposely pronounce a word incorrectly to get engagement from comments of, "Actually, it's pronounced, XXX"....and what about it??? They're just trying to get engagement (if true, but honestly I feel like this is one of those things where the percentage of mispronunciations being intentional is a lot lower than OP thinks).

IDK man, am I missing something here?

Yeah, they're canon in the original Greek.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Six and half is completely reasonable, and the others are also doable just with a little more effort. If you live in one of the larger states, then those are pretty normal figures for driving to an event. I don't see the problem here.

DA
Same here, the only place I've seen any talks of wrong pronunciations are the secrets I see posted on here

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to say New York City, you can just say New York. Everyone knows New York is the city, anywhere else in the state is where you need to take the name. And who drives from Miami to New York? You fly for that one. Jesus, it isn't even expensive.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but there are several places where you could draw a 17-hour line and hit at least three states.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Instead of people accepting that maybe some pieces of media or fanworks are not for them, many fans now expect every piece of media or fanwork to be all things to every possible consumer all the time. Frankly, that's impossible. Different people are going to want different things from media and there is no way that creators are going to be able to satisfy all of them all the time.

And that's leaving out the very loud (but hopefully not that large) contingent of entitled assholes that will not be satisfied with anything other than exactly what they want, all the time.

This was back in the 1980s. Colin Baker, the actor who played the sixth Doctor, had a very vocal contingent of haters in the fandom who just Did Not Like Him. He and his wife had a baby who died of SIDS, and those fans were absolutely horrible about it, gloating and saying he deserved it and things like that. I left the fandom and never went back.

*ayrt, btw

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like to a degree this is due to Hollywood's reaction to the age of "angry video reviews" popularized by James Rolfe and his contemporaries/knockoffs.

Hollywood saw at conventions and online how fans reacted to and interacted with "plothole *ding!*" bitch-fests and thought, "We should listen to the fans," and now it's like an arms race to "do it right" by listening to the fans.

But I think if we take a step back, we're just feeding into people's bad faith takes on media. And studios/powers that be are so focused on "proving" how much they are listening to the fans that they aren't allowing creatives to prove that they can create great works.

Just like issues with diversity in media, it feels a lot more like like checking off a list rather than honoring an attempt at great art/storytelling.

Yikes, I wasn't aware of that. I stopped reading it quite a while ago but kept the link in case I wanted to finish it someday. Guess I can lose that link now.

If you're driving from Miami, Florida to New York City, it takes 18.

Except literally no one would ever do that. You would just take Amtrak instead.

I'm sorry, that sucks. I hope you do get to see it someday.

I think it's worth noting that people with learning disabilities exist as well.

Like one of my friends is dyslexic, if they're reading a new word they almost always get it wrong because letters and their brain don't mix well, hell even after they hear the way it's meant to say there's still a good chance they'll pronounce it wrong after because their brain latches onto how they first heard it. It's not malice or deliberate trolling, they just find words hard. It's easy to imagine that many youtubers could be dyslexic too as it's very common and you can't tell who has it by looking at them or how they present themselves, nor is it something they have to or want to disclose.

I think it's very weird for OP to be ascribing deliberate intent toward something that could have any number of explanations.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be some of both reasons, but you'd be surprised how common it is for a native speaker to mispronounce a word because they genuinely think that's how it's said. It happens in audiobooks, too.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Without looking it up, please tell me how you would pronounce Leicester OP.

I've seen some great anime adaptations of shojo and SF manga. The Toward the Terra TV series comes to mind. As for shonen, I think the first two seasons of Rurouni Kneshin are excellent. The third wasn't nearly as good because they caught up with the manga and had to make a bunch of filler. Ratings dropped and the series was cancelled by the time the last arc of the manga finished.

The actual point of a road trip is that it does take multiple days. That is the whole reason it is called a road trip and not just a vacation. If you are not doing multiple days, you are not road tripping properly. Complaining that your road trip is taking two days is like complaining your glass of water is wet and in a glass.
