They have a checklist of talking points that all shows must cover, and fuck 'em if they do it out of order or put a play on them much less miss 'em. I hate modern fandom.

When people called out old Doctor Who fandom, it was to point out how horrid it could be. It wasn't a badge of pride for all other fandoms to live down to, but that is how it seems to have been taken.

I think part of the problem is that current fandom approach is to (not universally, but it definitely happens) reward people for finding flaws in the media they consume. It feels virtuous to uncover and loudly trumpet on social media a mistake or oversight, and if enough people go digging deep, of course they're going to find a flaw. Even if they have to really reach for it. And then more and more people feel virtuous if they signal boost that discovery, even if they haven't verified it for themselves or even seen the media in question. It's ridiculous.

This. And there's no point in criticizing the vast swathes of reactionary media that's not even going to try, only the stuff that is basically well-intentioned and might get a reaction.

Some people really do seem to watch media with some kind of checklist and if even one thing is missing from that checklist then it means the show/movie is bad, terrible, and must be complained about at all costs.

Like I have no idea what happened to being a forgiving audience member and rolling with what the media is actually giving you(I am not going to expect a C-list show to have A-list writing and acting, like, what?), and it's really annoying. Not everything needs to be nitpicked to death, sometimes it's okay to just have fun with something.

I agree. Instead of people accepting that maybe some pieces of media or fanworks are not for them, many fans now expect every piece of media or fanwork to be all things to every possible consumer all the time. Frankly, that's impossible. Different people are going to want different things from media and there is no way that creators are going to be able to satisfy all of them all the time.

And that's leaving out the very loud (but hopefully not that large) contingent of entitled assholes that will not be satisfied with anything other than exactly what they want, all the time.

I feel like to a degree this is due to Hollywood's reaction to the age of "angry video reviews" popularized by James Rolfe and his contemporaries/knockoffs.

Hollywood saw at conventions and online how fans reacted to and interacted with "plothole *ding!*" bitch-fests and thought, "We should listen to the fans," and now it's like an arms race to "do it right" by listening to the fans.

But I think if we take a step back, we're just feeding into people's bad faith takes on media. And studios/powers that be are so focused on "proving" how much they are listening to the fans that they aren't allowing creatives to prove that they can create great works.

Just like issues with diversity in media, it feels a lot more like like checking off a list rather than honoring an attempt at great art/storytelling.

+1

People have also learned that they can gain social clout by being very critical and picking out the flaws in everything, so they do. As Majel Barrett Roddenberry put it, "The easiest way for inadequate talent to obtain notoriety is by being negative."

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're not fans, they're performers themselves seeking attention with brash negativity. I would like to think if Twitter finally dies we'll see less of that, but I'm sure they'll find a way.

I am too tired for this

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
They're also less literate than they used to be.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. I think that's one big drawback of companies/creators/celebrities being in such easy reach on social media, it makes people think they can demand them to do whatever they want.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
social media has conditioned people to think that their thoughts must be vomited out into the ether constantly; there have always been fans like this, but they never had the reach that the internet has allowed them before

Everything changed when the #scnydercut fanboys attacked.

Definitely true of the Star Wars fandom. I am a fan of Star Wars, but I hate the fandom. It's made up of the most insufferable, unpleasable assholes around.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Also true of MCU fandom.
