(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 02:13 am (UTC)(link)A flight from Miami to New York costs about $170. That's around a 20 hour drive, which means you're going to need to stay overnight in a hotel, so $90-100 for that unless you're okay with staying in some shitty roach-infested motel. You're going to need to eat dinner at the very least, so assuming you get cheap fast food, that's going to be around $15. So already you're running at least $105 for the trip even before the cost of gas. And then there's the fact that you need to allot two days of time just to the traveling part, which means you have to take an extra day off for that. If you work hourly, that's an entire other day worth of lost pay.
When you add all of that up, it's going to be at LEAST $170 if not more.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-20 02:27 am (UTC)(link)IF you can fly. Some people have to run the cost/benefit analysis of flying while disabled. God forbid the airlines follow ADA laws.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-21 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)Also, those fares are for the cheapest economy flights before paying for food, checked (and maybe even carry-on) bags, seat assignment, etc. And there's parking or other transportation to and from the airport. I think that there's at least a hundred dollars more of hidden expenses there, if not more, depending on how much convenience you require.
Really, America is so huge that each person needs to do their own math. For some, driving is cheaper, for others, obviously flying is going to be so much better, and the convenience might offset any money saved. And then there are the outliers, with service animals or disabilities or other mitigating factors.
