Miami is in no way rural America. If you're out in the heartland it could be a couple hours of driving just to get to an airport, so that just drives the cost up further.

Also, those fares are for the cheapest economy flights before paying for food, checked (and maybe even carry-on) bags, seat assignment, etc. And there's parking or other transportation to and from the airport. I think that there's at least a hundred dollars more of hidden expenses there, if not more, depending on how much convenience you require.

Really, America is so huge that each person needs to do their own math. For some, driving is cheaper, for others, obviously flying is going to be so much better, and the convenience might offset any money saved. And then there are the outliers, with service animals or disabilities or other mitigating factors.
