I mean if you're comparing the US to the entire EU, the distances can be roughly comparative. In total surface area, Europe is slightly bigger than the US, and though the European Union does not encompass all of Europe, there are locations within the EU that are as far apart from one another as San Fransisco is from New York.

Then again, there are locations in the US that are much further apart from one another than San Francisco and New York.
