What? Be cried? I don't think i'd heard.

I feel like people are blowing this out of proportion. Yes, he stressed at first about the green screen filming and did cry. But he got used to it and in the end was happy he did the movies.

I mean, just because you only had one crying emotional breakdown at work doesn't mean that doesn't suck. Most people prefer not to have any.

It also doesn't make green screen inherently bad just because one actor was uncomfortable filming alone at first.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It was bad in The Hobbit, though. The mix of practical and CGI effects in Lord of the Rings was a fantastic balance.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
It was bad in The HObbit because it was bad CGI, not because they used it. CGI and practical effects are both equally good and bad, depending on how they are used. Really good CGI can look entirely realistic and entirely good.

More specifically, it was bad in The Hobbit because the studio wanted a 3D film. Forced perspective, used so well in the LotR films, doesn't work in 3D.

+1

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, is that why they did that?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Is anyone actually saying that all CGI use is bad? Who are you talking to?

Sure, as it did in Lord of the Rings!

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. The LOTR look better than the Hobbit films, despite the time gap between them. It's a shame, really.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Did anyone actually say green screen was inherently bad, or are you just arguing with an imaginary opponent for the lulz?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
When filming LotR, he wasn't filming alone, that's the point.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I may have misunderstood the article I read but I always thought he got to hate the green screens later on. He was OK with the process at first but eventually he got sick of it and wanted to act with other actors again.

God I remember watching the Hobbit at the cinema and getting the worst headache ever after watching the cgi that they used (It was a long time ago - but I remember that they adjusted it for home release and I had an easier time watching it then; but that first viewing was not worth it).

For anyone interested in the BTS dirt on how soulless the studios were about the Hobbit movies, Lindsay Ellis has a great series on it. She interviews an NZ actor who played one of the dwarves, and it really drives home the difference between how the Rings films were made and how the Hobbit ones were. Not to mention, like, fucking up labour rights for actors in this part of the world permanently, lol.

I think the motivations behind a creative project always come through in the final product. The Hobbit films were... just empty, somehow.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
God, the interviews hurt. The dwarf actors were so ready to be the next Fellowship in terms of actor camaraderie and they got shafted.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
He cried and despaired over his career choices because of The Hobbit???

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
The way I heard it it was more due to isolation since he wasn't sharing scenes with anyone (due to how they were doing the height differences) and basically acting in open air.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-24 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for clearing that up.
