Audiobooks

Do you listen to them? What are your favorites?

I listen to them occasionally. My favorites have been NOS4A2 and World War Z. They are both amazing.

I have over 200 audiobooks in my "for later" list at the library. It never seems to get any an smaller cause I keep finding more I want to listen to. XD

Re: Audiobooks

I'd like to, because they're a great format for my commute, but one of my misophonia triggers is continuous, even talking, so most audiobooks are out for me, along with most podcasts and talk radio shows. Ironically, scripted/narrative podcasts tend to work better, but that's more due to the variation of the sounds than the stories.

One that has worked for me, which I still use for longer travels, is the Bloody Jack series, narrated by Katherine Kellgren; it's a comfort series for me to begin with, a rollicking adventure with great character work, and Katherine does an incredible job with every part of it.

I keep trying to get into them but I can't find any narrators I like. Also, it seems like a waste of time.

I listen to audiobooks a lot when I work, although less now that I work from home and can also watch TV. I do want to shout out the audiobook for Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, which is absolutely phenomenal.

I have a voice kink so I tend to listen to them even if I don't care for the plot as long as I find the narrator's voice sexy.

I've listened to very boring books for Richard Armitage and even worse books for Gideon Emery. I've even bought The Return of the Natives for Alan Rickman back when I was a teenager and audiobooks were still kinda rare even though I absolutely loathe Thomas Hardy's writing.

I don't-- audio processing is unreliable as hell, I can only do podcasts in short chunks and trying to get through an audiobook stresses me out.

That said... I absolutely recommend the... I want to say it was the Stephen Briggs recording of some of Terry Pratchett's books? I mean you can't go wrong with Discworld. (and the familiarity means I can sit back and enjoy the audiobook without the same kind of stress)

Re: Audiobooks

I used to love audios books when I was a kid and used to listen to them when my Dad drove on car trips (main ones I remember were Just William, Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and Journey into Space - although the last one was just a radio show, but was still a fun one).

But now, I can never seem to focus. I don't know why I could just focus better in a car than at home - but I can never really seem to focus. The last one I listened to was Good Omens and my mind kept wandering off halfway through, so I had to relisten to many parts of it.

I’ve listened to a couple, but I just can’t get into any of them. My mind wanders too much. I can focus on the story when I’m the one reading it, but not if I’m listening to it.

I love certain audiobooks that combine my favourite books with great reading voices.

Current top picks:
- John Le Carré’s spy novels read by Michael Jayston
- Rivers of London (urban fantasy) series read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith

Re: Audiobooks

I've tried, but since I can't listen to anything without doing something else (and then promptly whitenoise whatever I am listening to) I have given up lol!

Also the thought of spending 12+ hours listening to something I can read in a third of that time is just like, naur man.

Re: Audiobooks

(Anonymous) 2023-08-26 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Im big into audiobooks now, though I didn’t used to be. I got started with ones of Neil Gaiman reading his own work, after seeing videos of him reading stories on YouTube. I like that I can listen to stories while I’m doing something like getting ready in the morning, and I don’t have as much time to actually read as I used to. My attention span also kind of flipped. There are audiobooks I’ve listened to that I never would have had the patience to actually read. That said, sometimes the narrator is so bad that I can’t listen to a book.

I haven't listened to it yet, but I'm excited for the new audio book of A Stitch in Time (the Trek novel) read by the author. But then, I'm a Garak fan.

Nope. I've tried a few times and it's just weirdly grating to me and I don't know why. After a few minutes, I just turn it off. I am fine with comedy stand-up albums, but something about a disembodied voice reading a book doesn't work for me.

Weekend Plans!

What is everyone doing this weekend?

I am visiting my sister. I had a very rough week so hoping to relax. One of my cats passes away last night so not feeling great. So will mostly be chilling and processing.

Sorry for your loss. Hope you get to relax as much as possible.

I will probably do some food shopping, and hope to finish a fic chapter.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Hopefully you get to relax and take some time and process.

I am mostly going to be sleeping and cleaning. That's the plan, at least.

Sleep. Didn't sleep at all last night, 4 hours the night before. I'm about to crash honestly, except my brain is still a bit wired from work.

If I've caught up enough, I may go to the movies tomorrow or sunday evening. There are evening showings of either Jurassic Park in 3d, Dungeons and Dragons, or Indy 5. Not sure which one yet.

I'm so, so sorry about your kitty. From what I know of you around here, I"m sure your kitty was well loved and adored and lived its very best life. Take care of yourself this weekend.

TMI question

(Anonymous) 2023-08-26 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone found any decent cures/or at least something to help a major gas attack? I've got a doctor's appointment coming up. But my chest feels so tight I can't sleep, and it won't end.
