The gripe thread!

Gripe and vent away!

My favorite fanfics keep not updating and it hurts my spirit. The one I'm most eager to read more of used to update weekly. Like clockwork. Then no more. I know I'm not owed anything, I know the author has a life, I know nobody has to write if they don't feel like it--goddamn it I just want more

This is really 1st world problem-y.

My family has subscribed to a vegan meal service where they send you the ingredients and recipes and you cook the meals. At first I was happy, because there are plenty of places on earth that feature vegetarian or vegan foods (China, India, Israel, Greece, etc.), and I was excited to hopefully try these recipes and foods. But its been really disappointing as most of the meals aren't anything specific like, say, biryani or even a simple stir fry, they're a weird hodge-podge of random stuff that just feels thrown together and called a meal. Like tofu with collards and zucchini, with toasted almonds on top. And don't get me started on vegan "dairy" like cheese made from cashews or sour cream made from who knows what. I can't tell you anything specific about what I've actually eaten, because it all blends together into one mediocre unhappy meal. It's just not very good, is all, and I'm disappointed with the lack of actual recipes (yes tofu with collards and zucchini with toasted almonds follows a recipe, I was expecting more like aloo gobi I guess). Anyway. Wah.

Ugh. Honestly, dishes like that are why vegan/vegetarian food has a bad reputation. And yet... I suspect it's that way for a reason because I browse several cooking-related subreddits and the number of people I see on there who want ideas for vegan/vegetarian dishes but don't want to cook/eat anything "exotic" are just disappointing AND puzzling.

da - it is puzzling. I'd suggest that maybe changing their diet to eat less meat or go meat free is different enough at first and cooking something too far outside of what is familiar on top of that may seem too intimidating.

My brother subscribed to a specifically Indian meal service and could select vegan as one of the options and apparently it's really good. But he lives in London, so he has a lot more options than most people. Might be worth checking out if you live in a big city?

I feel for you, but also you’re not going to get a lot of authentic recipes from the cultures that you’ve listed that are vegan. Vegetarian, yes. But the vegan versions are going to be full of fake dairy, oil, agave and sadness.

Not going into details, but two issues at work today.

1. An issue where head boss is absolutely wrong about something but is insisting we now do something a certain way which will not work and is going to hurt our clients. Really frustrating.

2. An issue came up today where my boss and head boss have opposite ideas of something. I honestly don't care either way, but I keep getting told to do one way by one of them and then the other way by the other. I just want to know what I'm supposed to do.

Also, Texas drivers are just terrible. Selfish, don't pay attention, and generally awful. I saw a 3 dead animals in the road coming home today. I get that it happens, but it has never been as frequent anywhere else I've driven.

I hate that there’s so much freaking traffic and the fact that the train isn’t a viable solution (train takes three hours and involves a transfer in a sketchy area, while car takes two hours).

I feel you. To take the bus to my monthly away-from-the-shop staff meeting is a 2 and a half hour trip with multiple transfers to go ten freaking miles.

Secrets are so boring that half the time nobody replies to them. Stop being so niche, or at least stop being so unwanky.

This comment right here proves my point that this comm loves wank (and really ad hominen riddled comments) more than anyone wants to admit. This makes my media analysis-focused self cry.

One whiny complaint "proves" nothing. F!S is not a monolith.

AYRT

Given how the most active comments sections tend to be on posts with posts about JK Rowling's transphobia, I'm inclined to disagree.

Nah. I love niche secrets. It's good to know drama is happening in places I don't know about. It's not about the response, it's about getting things off of our chests and sometimes that's super personal.

And besides, sometimes the most niche secret I have get a million responses while something super pop-culturally relevant gets crickets.

It's not about the response, it's about getting things off of our chests and sometimes that's super personal.

Given how many would-be wank fans might be lurking around F!S as of late, I suspect that there's some quiet resistance to this idea.

I want to know why it is considered okay and socially acceptable for Vegans to trick people into eating vegan food, but not regular folks to trick vegans into eating meat dishes? I did not consent to have a vegan burger when I ordered a regular one, but somehow it is a jolly jape to give me one anyway. Fuck you.

Re: The gripe thread!

(Anonymous) 2023-08-26 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s not. Never has been. Vegan food has a high allergen risk, and fucking with people’s food is a dick move regardless. Some assholes are just vegan.

Re: The gripe thread!

(Anonymous) 2023-08-26 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They probably just made a mistake with your order and tried to save face or wanted to get rid of some vegan burgers they had to cook/was already cooked. (worked in the industry for years, sometimes people do that to not waste food unfortunately)
If you ordered something else it is not "jolly jape" (what a cute saying!) to give you a vegan burger or anything different from you desired choice.

That's so dangerous too. A lot of people are allergic to soy and a lot of substitutes have soy in them. D:

A lot of people are allergic to legumes and various and sundry grains as well.
