I'm looking for a new show. Figured others might be as well.

Favorite completed anime??

(Anonymous) 2023-09-20 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
One Piece has me wanting to watch some anime. I don't know what is cool these days. I am looking for completed series for adults (not sexual just no Naruto). Preferably no pervy stuff. Bonus if it has a big fanfic presence.

I've watched Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and DBZ. Plus parts of various others (Trigun, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, Inuyasha).

I love Samurai Champloo. It has the only acceptable bouncing-boobs-while-running scene in all of anime.

What is cool these days (kind of): Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Boruto, Chainsaw Man, Trigun reboot.

What I personally enjoy: Tsurune

A middle ground in terms of popularity + not being too silly + not being too old that I personally enjoyed (although it never hit quite like the first season): Psycho-Pass

>Jujutsu Kaisen

This has been all over my tiktok today.

The first three (Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia) are called the modern day Big 3 (a spot once occupied by Naruto, OP, Bleach) so they should be very popular!

I don't know what is cool now, but I always would recommend Monster and Mushishi

As an anime-loving adult, these are the ones which I have watched and enjoyed. They are kind of all over the place thematically though - in the sense that this list has a good mix of horror, action, comedy, slice of life and plain old existentialism. Hope you find something you like.

Monster
Wolf's Rain
Mushishi
Natsume Yuujinchou
Kakeguruii
Gensoumaden Saiyuki and its sequels
Black Lagoon
Boku Dake ga Inai Machi
Death Note
Gintama
Get Backers
Jigoku Shouju
Jigokuraku
Ayakashi: japanese classic horror

Youtube list channels

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-09-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Due to being sick, been watching a bunch of list videos on Youtube. I'm hoping someone can rec some channels I haven't watched yet.

Once I've been watching: Whatculture (and spin-off channels), TopTenz (and spin-offs), Council of Geeks, Rowan J Coleman, WatchMojo, and Bumblebee.

So...not exactly lists but I love these videos. They are each about 20 minutes and cover all the major events of each year (news, entertainment, sports). They do it in time order. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJlSmMy6ldlmNPM2w-8qm0TjuE27Itoqx

Not a list channel, but if you enjoy watching someone who is smart, funny, upbeat, and so fucking competent, this is the channel for you.

I crush on Laura SO MUCH.

Jolly (https://www.youtube.com/@jolly/videos) is super fun. It's mostly two British guys trying out American foods and reacting to them. There's also a British school they frequently go to, to give the kids and one of the teachers foods to try out and react to. They have a few friends that join them from time to time, and they've done a couple US road trips trying different restaurants. It's super entertaining.

Then there's everything in the Liberal Redneck universe. There are four main hosts, who are liberal comedians from various southern states. There are three different main shows with various combinations of the hosts (occasionally they switch it up or have other friends join them).

There's WellRed, which is about whatever random topics they feel like talking about. I don't watch that one as often because they frequently talk about sports, which I have no interest in. Then there's Weekly Skews, which is about mainly politics. They're both on the same channel, here: https://www.youtube.com/@TraeCrowderLiberalRedneck/videos

Then there's Puttin On Airs (which has its own channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@PuttinOnAirsPodcast/videos), which started with the concept that half the show is about the various topics where "fancy" rich people and rednecks overlap, and then the other stuff is some historical topic with at least a tenuous link to something "fancy". But over time it's kind of evolved into anything even tangentially relating to "fancy" or "redneck" topics (a lot of making fun of the crazy things rich people do, and stories of the hosts' childhood/young adulthood in Tennesee and Georgia).

Then there's a podcast I've been listening to for the past couple months called Beach Too Sandy Water Too Wet, where they read weird/crazy reviews of various places/products, which is usually hilarious. I listen to the audio version, but I know they have a YouTube channel too, although I haven't watched it.

...Actually, I just looked it up and there are only a small handful of videos, but the rec still stands in case you have any interest in podcasts, too!

And one final rec, which isn't YouTube, so feel free to ignore it, but they're super entertaining videos. It's a chef who reacts to videos of people making crazy/awful food concoctions, and it's super entertaining: https://twitter.com/ChefReactions. He has a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@chefreactions/videos) but it's mainly longer, vloggy-style videos, which aren't as interesting to me. I'm not usually into super short videos, but to me, those are the best/most entertaining ones of his, and they're on Twitter.

Just now realized that I'd completely missed "list channel", so disregard my comment!

TV Shows

Looking for a TV show with a tight completed plot. I am one of those pretentious "prestige TV" enjoyers. Any language, actually non-English are preferable

Can you give examples of what you mean?

Re: TV Shows

(Anonymous) 2023-09-21 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
For example Dark, Mr Robot, Breaking Bad, Band of Brothers have start and ending, they have whole story and I really adore this in TV shows. I know this community doesn't really like The Good Place and it's ending (at least vocally), but I respect this show for having thought out ending and decent pacing through seasons even if I am not heavy into sitcoms.
Also various mini-series usually my thing.
(I gravitate towards either more serious shows or quirky in tone and they are usually popular among critics. I feel a bit weird about it so I am being a bit flippant)

Check out "My Brilliant Friend" if you haven't, on HBO (whatever their streaming service is called now)

The 4th & final season is not out yet, but it's based on a book series (also worth checking out!) so the ending is already guaranteed.

The Chinese drama Nirvana in Fire if you can find it with good subs (Viki is probably the best option... or a site that has their files). Do NOT try the Dubai. It's horrible.

The Bridge (Swedish/Danish) version. One of my favourite TV shows of all time.

Fanart(/fanworks in general) website recs?

(Anonymous) 2023-09-21 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a show, but a website rec. If it's ok.

Does anyone know a good platform for fan/works sharing? For me personally Tumblr was perfect (searchable tags, popular enough, multiple post formats, customizable portfolio layout, free customizable domain and so on) until the porn ban happened, since then I went from making 10 fanart pieces a year to maybe 2 in a good year because I don't have anywhere to share them and it bugs me loads. I'm probably just going back to Tumblr even though it's less than ideal now (less popular, layouts ruined, no free domains) but it's still better than the other options. Twitter and Instagram suck for portfolio building. AI ruined Artstation. Deviantart uses your work to feed AI softwares so no. Pixiv is anime drawings-only. Honestly I'm this close to making a new Tumblr portfolio. The alternative is, well, Dreamwidth.

So, the question. Where do you browse fanarts, if you like them? If you share them, where?
