I agree the majority of fandom can be like that, if you're mostly just going by some clips and Wiki and looking for a kind of vibe (or trope) or just in it for the pretty.

But even the most 'shallow' fandom will have moments, lines, scenes, etc., from the canon material that informs the fandom that isn't something that's immediately apparent to just a quick surface skim.

So - enjoy fandom however you like! But I think actually watching the canon material at some point can enrich the experience for pretty much everyone.
