Oof, this is a spicy take but... I don't entirely disagree with you?

I do think when fandoms start out they can be deep and the first 1-3 months will be the only time this will happen, but after that the characters will get simplified down to one trope and 1-2 personality traits and thus strip any depth the fanon once had, and that's usually the point I check out of a fandom. The potential and originality is gone.

I agree the majority of fandom can be like that, if you're mostly just going by some clips and Wiki and looking for a kind of vibe (or trope) or just in it for the pretty.

But even the most 'shallow' fandom will have moments, lines, scenes, etc., from the canon material that informs the fandom that isn't something that's immediately apparent to just a quick surface skim.

So - enjoy fandom however you like! But I think actually watching the canon material at some point can enrich the experience for pretty much everyone.

In my experience there is a wide range of ways people come at fandom. In the Tolkien fandom at least, there is a whole lot of discussions on various aspects of canon, and it can often get pretty deep. There is also lots of more shallow stuff. Personally I love it all. The variety and range is one of the things i love about my fandom.

there are many individual fan works which are deep and many which are very not but sure if you wanna lump together the entire fuckin fandom as a single entity.

Friendship is Magic produced both deep and shallow fic in large quantities. You just needed to check rec lists instead of looking for the most popular stories.

Eh, it's very easy to spot an OOC!MC. It may not be deep for the quick stuff/crack. But the epics/crack-treated-seriously needs to have that deep understanding pervading the fic.

Big fandoms are like the ocean. Lots of light and life and visible activity at the surface. But just because you don't go deep doesn't mean the depths aren't there.

I only saw Barbie and I didn't love it, but I Agree. Used to love superhero/comic book movies, but there's so many of them now. I'm ready for different genres to dominate the box office/pop culture conversations. (Also, they're based off preexisting people/toys, but +1000 for neither of them being sequels/reboots to other films!!)

For me, it'd be instant ramen, a guilty pleasure of mine. I just love the stuff and always have, but try not to eat it too often because of the sodium content and my blood pressure. (And yes, I know I could not use the packet, but that defeats the purpose of it for me.) How about you?
