I mean, is that supposed to be a problem?

Do all fandoms need to be deep to be worthy on some level?

I often find people lean heavily one way or the other depending on if they want to feel superior.

It can be both, it can be neither. It depends on how you utilize it.

Smut fics for me are fun yes, but they also are an avenue for me to explore my sexuality and personal trauma without much risk. But I'm not going to discuss the deeper parts of that to anyone because it's none of their business.

Fandom can be a useful tool in helping people pivot towards more/deeper things. It doesn't always mean a fandom is deep merely because there are deep themes or connections, but to scoff at fandom as if it's trivial or lacking in depth on the macro is...not something I can agree with.
