i don't think a sign of a fandom's depth should be it's fanfiction personally, nor do i think you can get into all fanfiction with basic character dynamics and a wiki...and i'm speaking as someone who often does do just that. there's clearly shit im missing, ala when i read lotr fic and that's with me being knowing the hobbit and the silmarillion, and a good deal of the movies. and you've got to understand...the lotr wiki is wildly comprehensive.

sidenote: wikis are written by human beings who usually aren't even the creators. they don't actually always know what's important to a reader/viewer/listener and there have been so SO many times I've read a movie wiki for instance and then watched the movie and wondered what the wiki writer was smoking.
