Worst character arcs

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-09-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Opposite of yesterday's thread. What characters do you think had the worst arcs? Whether because they were uninteresting, badly done, or just the wrong arc for the character.

Jaime. Bran. Tyrion. Jon Snow. Cersei. Most of the GoT cast, tbh.

Thanks, D&D.

Man, I got tired of Tyrion's book arc too. It just didn't work for me.

Tyrion in general is so overrated. He was okay in the first book/first season. But he got really, really old really fast.

Oh man, billy from Stranger Things. It wasn't even a *character arc*, he was just a racist douchebag with a last minute heroic sacrifice, and there was nothing compelling about him that made it emotionally impactful. Trying to lay in a sympathetic backstory just felt annoying because by that point... he wasn't just a jerk/bully who could come around, and he didn't only do horrible things while possessed, like his baseline was racist child-endangerer and at NO point did we see any remorse for any of that?

I just wish he had killed his abusive father when possessed. Especially since his father was shown hitting his mom. So it isn't like he wouldn't start abusing his new wife and kid.

I still would have hated him but at least it would have felt like a moment he earned even if it was being possessed that pushed him into it, you know?

First thought was Sylar on Heroes, although that was less of an arc and more of a wavy line.

Gaius van Baelsar in FFXIV. He's straight-up an actual fascist who never, ever renounces those views, but gets a weird gross "redemption arc" that involves him having horrifically abused and killed children, but he kinda feels bad about that.

Like... I don't know how to tell people that just because he also helps out a bit in taking down the Empire, he still wants fascist rule of Eorzea. He thought Varis wasn't fashy enough!! How does anyone give him a pass??

Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother) and Ross Gellar (Friends) seemed to get progressively more insufferable as the seasons went on and honestly didn't seem to learn much.

Adalind Schade (Grimm) - the writers were a little too enamored of her and just sort of presented her as redeemed without an actual redemption arc (because the pregnancy brought about by her intimate fraud rape fixed everything, I guess?).

Basically everyone in the MCU.

Hux and Fynn. One was a throwaway villain who could have been kinda interesting but was relayed to the butt of every dumb as fuck joke and a silly comic relief, the other started out as a potentially interesting deuteragonist and was banished to bland uninterersting NPC status.

I weep for Hux, he could have been a good scary bad guy. And Finn? Get out of here. What a loss.

I'm also mad about Kylo Ren. If he had gone full evil it would have been great. I'll readily admit that the 2 minutes of Ben Solo are some of my favorite so if they'd turned him earlier I'd have been happy BUT I'm so sick of redemption = death. No. Fuck that. Send him to jail and/or have him live the rest of his life helping others. Instead we get a hot mess. I just ::shakes fist at Disney:: would have been happy with anything but somehow we got nothing.

Yeah it was just an all out mess for so many characters in those movies.
I think what bothers me the most about Hux and Kylo is how they had so much potential to be scary villains and by making them the butt of all jokes/comic relief and kinda incompetent, it made the good guys actually look worse as well. Nothing more embarassing to have bumbling comic relief idiots as your adversaries and still not win against them with ease.

Robin and Barney from How I Met Your Mother, both as individual character arcs and the arc of them as a couple.

Two people terrible at committing and relationships grow together and mature as individuals and a couple and then the last episode is a jump cut to the two of them shrugging their shoulders like, "Welp, time to revert back to season 2 versions of ourselves."
And then the added insult of "Barney sees his offspring and makes a grand speech" as his series ending moment. Alongside the shit ending Robin got.

Like, I don't even consider myself a fan of the show (casual viewer, didn't go out of my way to watch but always enjoyed watching it when someone had it playing) and the last episode of HIMYM still managed to piss me off. I felt like they wasted so many seasons to piss all over it to get that convoluted ending.

So many for Game of Thrones but the one I'll name is Petyr Baelish. What a waste.
