I mean you said it yourself, you don’t really play open world RPGs so it isn’t a surprise that you don’t understand why players (and critics and other developers) called BotW revolutionary.

TotK sucked. It’s a bore. They managed to take all the best parts of BotW and suck the enjoyment out of them.

But open world RPGs have made up the smallest slice of the annual gaming releases for nearly a decade. We get 3-4 a year most of the time and the majority are unplayable (*cough* Kingdom Come *cough*). It’s a lot more of you count MMOs but they’re really a different genre and the crossover in players isn’t that big. I wish we got more because I’m always hearing about how much people love this game or that game and then I try it and it just sucks. I cannot stand turn-based combat, which is most games now. It’s a play style that came about after I’d been gaming for years and I always thought it was meant preschoolers because it’s so suitable for that age group.

I will fight you on turn-based combat, and I will do so by selecting “Attack” from a menu. Convoluted movesets are too awkward for real-time, and the hybrid stuff people try to do ends up being the worst of both worlds, so turn-based is best when you want the PC to be able to do a fuckton of different things.

Can I politely ask what, in your opinion, BoTW did that was revolutionary? I see it (understandably) getting a ton of love from longtime fans of the series because hey, it's bigger and prettier than ever and that has a lot of weight when it's an IP you grew up with, but I've yet to hear anything that really sets it apart from any other open-world game.

Turn-based combat has been around since the early to mid 80's; it's not a new thing, nor a particularly prevalent one these days IMO (even Final Fantasy has moved away from it). And saying it's for preschoolers, I'm uh, just gonna ignore that for now.

I started gaming in the 70s. Turn based combat came about in my country in the mid 80s. Turn based was developed for young children because they can’t perform the necessary actions in real-time.

This discussion isn't about the fact that your country apparently invented turn based gaming independently of every other country using completely different and fallacious reasoning.

Yeah, I'm honestly so over turn-based combat for anything other than strategy RPGs. It's great for RPGs like Fire Emblem where you have maps that you're moving your units around on, and where you place your units and how you group them up actually affects the outcome of the battle. Love that kind of thing.

But for a plain old RPG? No thanks. I hate having battles take forever. If I can kill something in three hits, I don't want to be forced to spend almost a minute selecting things from menus and then having to sit there and watch the animation.

What games are you playing that are turn based? Genuine question. I like turn based but very few games I’ve come across recently have that mechanic.

"Turn based combat is in most games" when modern games are overwhelmingly Soulslikes? rofl this is not a serious comment
