How does this work, like do you just ignore canon or come up with elaborate justifications for why Secretbadguy McBabyeater totally had good reasons for eating those babies or what? Not trying to be judgy, villains rock, but the "I still see them as a hero and consider their evil acts justified no matter what they are" is like ?? what

usually when i see this, the villain has been unknown but explicitly referenced as the cause of things the heroes are fighting...so are you saying that you believe the reason the villain gives when the reveal happens or do you really have no feelings toward the villain to begin with so it's easy to port good feels to them when they're known? like is there ever a case where you felt genuine disgust toward the "villain" and that feeling just completely goes away once you find out who they are?

Hard mode: Dread, from Otherland by Tad Williams. He starts out impersonating someone he murdered, and he doesn’t do a single decent thing after he’s revealed. His idea of flirting with someone is to set a person on fire to try to amuse her.

I would love examples, I often remain sympathetic to a character who was initially presented as heroic but I don't think I've ever just 100% seen a villain as heroic.

not OP, but for me the biggest offender here is Boyd from Dollhouse

because the ~twist~ reveal that one of the long-time staunch good guys is actually a bad guy risking life and limb undercover at his own company is so convoluted and makes NO sense

I'm like, that's a full ass pull for shock value, I reject it

IMO Breath of the Wild is not innovative. All it does is copy/paste ideas from the open world games that have been bog standard for the past 20 years and jammed it into the Switch console. The Ocarina of Time formula was getting stale and I get that Ninten wanted to do something different but the fact that they copied Elder Scrolls and Red Dead and gamers praised it as "revolutionary" is ridiculous.

All of these open world sandbox games are boring as hell. I tried to get into them but holy crap. They're always empty fields filled with copypasted assets. The same trees, the same hills, the same collectathon quests, recolored NPCs etc. Boggles my mind that Zelda "innovated" by copying what other devs did and then gamers rewarded them for serving them exactly same thing that they've been getting for over a decade at this point.

I hate open world games because they are all the exact same game just made in different engines by different companies. I'm glad I stopped playing AAA videogames once Breath of the Wild came out because I realized that we will be cursed with the open world sandbox plague for the rest of our lives. I have never been happier to skip Tears of the Kingdom.

I was going to ask why you think they will, but then the histrionics nearly every damn time they've recast Batman came to mind. At least they won't be able to say he's too tall this time. I honestly can't figure out if his being British will be seen as better or worse than Australian, but there will probably be at least a little kvetching, even though they'd likely be fine with an American actor for the Canadian character. I do remember back when Hugh Jackman was cast that some people were fairly scornful of his past with musicals, like they thought that meant Wolverine might burst into song and dance or as if that meant Jackman couldn't play him tough enough or something, so that was some really weird discourse.
