I've never seen even one fandom nickname that was tolerable...they're all painfully twee and embarrassing, ALL of them.

Shoot, you've never been ill until you've seen a Turrow fic in which Jack repeatedly calls Will "baby"...OMG *convulses*

Oh, man. I hate it SO MUCH. 'De', 'Der', 'Lo' (for Laura), and on and on.... Soon it'll be one-letter nicknames.

I'll keep reading if the fic is good, but omg, every time I hit that nickname, I wince.

Was "De" for "Dean" because omg omg, because that one physically hurts me. it's a one syllable name!!

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
RIGHT? Like... and I wouldn't mind it written out as 'Dee', depending on the circumstances... but I def associate 'De' with specific fics that did other things that bothered me and felt like the author did not care about the characters being recognizable.

YUP

*dies inside*

If it's a young kid, like under 6 I could see them using De as small kids will often shorten names to what letters they can pronounce. But that's it, any adult character saying that is immediately in the bin territory for a fic imo.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? It's like people don't understand wtf nicknames are or how they're used.

Teen Wolf in particular was bad, but I think every fandom I've been in has had some horrible nick name used in dead earnest by a writer that just makes me, at least, cringe hard.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

I'm reading a lot of dc/batman comics fic lately... people are definitely using one-letter nicknames lmao (largely "B" for Bruce/Batman).

I get it's a way to show the characters are being ~affectionate and close but a.) there are far better way to do this, and b.) when it's done with names that are one or even two syllables long it looks ridiculous! Not to mention it often butchers incredibly beautiful names, IMO.

'B' for Bruce/Batman (or Buffy) I can go for a bit, coming from certain characters. It totally worked for Faith. But yeah - most of the time? Just not on.

I assumed the single-letter nicknames in Batman fics was for operational reasons. Like, not giving away civilian identities over comms or not accidentally using code names in public.

(I mean, it only works so far, but it seems reasonable for dealing with casual eavesdropping.)

I'm with you for the most part.

However, there are characters that do nickname people willy-nilly. Like, I can buy all sorts of non-canon nicknames from Tony Stark, even if I don't like the names in particular (and now, I kind of want him to nickname someone 'Willy-Nilly' in fic). Also, I am sure that Stiles Stilinski has nicknamed someone just to annoy them and would again, so, again, even if I don't like it, it seems in-character. The rub is in how the other characters react.

Stiles called Derek Sourwolf one time and that was all the shippers needed. (I'm a Sterek shipper, so no shade here)

Seconding this. Tony Stark can toss out nicknames left and right and I'm eternally here for it. If a character is canonically shown to be nickname-happy, then it's fine, IMO.

Also, if two characters have never met in canon, or have never been formally introduced, then I may be okay with the use of nicknames, provided it feels IC for the nicknamer, and the nicknamee has an IC reaction to the nickname. Like, I was never an active Mystrade shipper, but I could totally buy Lestrade calling Mycroft "My" (setting aside the general linguistic awkwardness of using "My" as a nickname in written fiction, where if it falls at the beginning of a sentence, the reader won't immediately know it's a name).

Re: I'm with you for the most part.

Yeah, it's fine when it's characters who would use such nicknames, but often the people who use these fandom nicknames will have everyone use them, or even use it in prose. Worst cases for me are when it's not only OOC for the character speaking to use the nickname, but it's also OOC for the other character to accept such a nickname. Entry-level yakuza do not call their boss's right-hand man by a cutesy nickname to his face (actual thing I've seen in fic). That kind of shit is how you lose fingers.

Well yeah, mocking nicknames are definitely a character thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've backbuttoned out of so many Good Omens fics so fast. The summary and tags might be everything I want but if I see an 'Azira'/'Zira' I am GONE.

And that's just if it's in the narration. If *Crowley uses the fan nickname* I don't want to ever read anything the writer writes for any fandom, ever.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that sounds so irritating.

Omg. He already calls him 'angel' all the time, WHY DO YOU NEED SOMETHING ELSE???

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Still the worst one I've encountered - Gorn-Corn. For Aragorn. As spoken by Legolas. Owwwww

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I guffawed. Thank you for that.

I hope Gorn-Corn had an equally special pet name for his Leggy.

*STARES AT 99% OF FFXV FICS WHERE PROMPTO IS REFERRED TO AS "PROM"*

I hate it so much omg. I hate the nickname in its entirety, but holy shit no one ever calls him that. Ever. NO ONE. It's a bad nickname and you should all feel bad!

Seeing AOT fic writers referring to Bertholdt as "Bert/Bertl" because they can't be bothered to learn how to spell his name drives me up the fucking wall.
