I get it's a way to show the characters are being ~affectionate and close but a.) there are far better way to do this, and b.) when it's done with names that are one or even two syllables long it looks ridiculous! Not to mention it often butchers incredibly beautiful names, IMO.

I'm with you for the most part.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 06:41 am (UTC)(link)Also, if two characters have never met in canon, or have never been formally introduced, then I may be okay with the use of nicknames, provided it feels IC for the nicknamer, and the nicknamee has an IC reaction to the nickname. Like, I was never an active Mystrade shipper, but I could totally buy Lestrade calling Mycroft "My" (setting aside the general linguistic awkwardness of using "My" as a nickname in written fiction, where if it falls at the beginning of a sentence, the reader won't immediately know it's a name).

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)And that's just if it's in the narration. If *Crowley uses the fan nickname* I don't want to ever read anything the writer writes for any fandom, ever.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 05:31 am (UTC)(link)I hope Gorn-Corn had an equally special pet name for his Leggy.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-03 05:39 am (UTC)(link)I hate it so much omg. I hate the nickname in its entirety, but holy shit no one ever calls him that. Ever. NO ONE. It's a bad nickname and you should all feel bad!
