Complaints and hate sounds good to me.

It's always been like that in most places. You should have seen the kind of horrors we had going on right here on F!S back in, like, 2010. You have to curate your fandom experience carefully. Idk what fandom(s) you're in, but there are almost certainly others out there who take a more pleasant approach. You might have to do a bit of digging, and a lot of blocking/unfollowing to get rid of the unpleasant ones as well, but it's doable. One of my fandoms (MCR bandom) is infamous for behaving badly, but I've managed to create a fun and enjoyable experience by only following people who know how to be relatively normal about things they like.

This is true, but also it was easier to curate your fandom experience in most fandoms (though there's always a few like Doctor Who that are so intensely negative that it's hard to do!) Now the social media twitter and tumblr and insta versions of fandom mean that everything overlaps with everything so you're following someone because you like their Star Wars art then suddenly they're dumping rancid Tolkein takes on you...

Not OP

A common thing I've encountered is getting to know some seemingly chill people who are into the fandom and I get along well with them...only to discover in private places when it's anything outside of the very specific thing(s) they like in fandom they're kind of miserable people. There's a fault to everyone and everything that isn't specifically what appeals to them and aligns with their ideals is terrible and they have a laundry list of what's beneath them.

I tend to distance from such fandomers even if they're a BNF or relatively cool in public places in fandom.
Bad experiences have taught me to be cautious of such people.
Like, I try very hard to be mindful of when I'm being too pessimistic/negative and I've had friends who revel in misery a little too much. And I either become the punching bag or the sole person to change the mood and it's exhausting.

That is a pretty weak excuse. I'm not even sure it is completely true either. Still, the excuse of but we've always been shitty so excuse our current shittiness instead of expecting us to be better is... worse. You do understand why that is worse.

This is a hilariously bad faith interpretation of what I actually said, which is that this isn't a new development but there are pleasant people out there if you look for them

Agree.

More the internet and society in general than necessarily just fandom as far as bad vibes go. Most people aren't having the best time of their lives here in 2023.

While I remember fandoms bitching about absolutely anything even in 2004, the internet in general has become angrier, reactionary, and very much divisive. So much that these issues have bled not just into real life, but even fandom.

I blame those assholes who colonized fandom spaces just to "call out" what they saw as people doing things wrong. They just make the place seem nasty right from the off.

I'm in the Sanders Sides fandom and let me tell you its gone from being wary to check the fandom tags to see what evils fandom/Thomas has done, to just desperately seeking any kind of drama to winge about in the most comical fashion.

Like there's one person who got mad at Thomas for wearing a Spider-man costume, because the recent movie Into the Spiderverse was 'problematic' and apparently wearing a costume means that you support the evils of the over-worked cgi industry.
Thankfully other people have realized this and just ignore the morons while continuing to make fan content for ourselves while the complainers keep shitting themselves in the corner.
