Your game, your rules. This seems like a much smarter option than deliberately making things harder for yourself because some imaginary audience of hardcore gamers might disapprove.

I'm not going to blow $70 on a game just to ragequit after three hours when I could just as easily savescum or lower difficulty and actually get my money's worth of time and enjoyment.

I play most games on low difficulty tbh and have been playing BG3 on that setting, I play games to relax and have fun or enjoy a story, not to use as some kind of gamer-cred like it makes me cool that I finished it on the hardest setting. Nothing against people who like the challenge, go for it, but it isn't for me and I know that. It's why I'll never play a souls game, I don't want to be mad the entire time I'm playing a game, it'll eventually just make hate the game.

I'm just plain not that great at games. I don't have the reflexes for it, and it's hard for me to remember intricate combat moves fast enough to use them. I still enjoy playing them and for me games are usually still a challenge on Easy level. I don't get why anyone cares.

Dude, I savescum literally every game that'll let me. Otherwise, what's even the point of quicksave?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-12 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. A real life DnD campaign and a DnD-based video game are still vastly different. I'm a consumate savescummer, but I don't have any problems with bad rolls in DnD. A good GM will have you satisfied with the story no matter how the dice roll. A video game, even one as intricate as BG3, can only have finite possibilities.

how does this (whether you save or are on lower difficulty) come up? like is this a question people ask? it sounds ridiculous. is there any argument for giving a shit about saving or difficulty?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-12 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You wouldn't believe the hissyfits some gamers have about how other people play their own games. It's ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-12 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Those gamers need to put down their controllers and go outside for a spell.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, absolutely. I mean, I probably should do the same but for different reasons.

i don't understand this, like what is the reason?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
pride

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
What's the reason anyone tries to gatekeep a hobby? Pride, a weird connection of their self-worth and their hobby, just being a huffy asshole...

There are some gamers out there who legit think that a game having difficulty options somehow ruins a game, despite the fact that they can just not pick those options and play on the hardest setting. The fact that those options even exist means it's some 'scrub shit' that automatically makes someone a looser for playing.

They usually have really rancid takes on games that fall into the Cozy Games sphere as well because they're not about proving how 'good' you are at a game(or murdering things indiscriminately), which is obvs the only reason to play games. /s

I don't pay attention to them but I unfortunately know they exist because I've stumbled into them both online and irl.

Oh lord, I remember reading a walkthrough guide once where the first paragraph was basically "play on hard or don't play at all". Thankfully haven't seen anything like that since. At least, not on the guide sites I use.

but like what do they say when people ask why they care?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Probably something about ethics in gaming journalism.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing coherent or worthwhile, it's usually just a lot of disparaging comments about the people who play those games. Which is why I say I don't pay attention to them, I've just had run-ins over the years.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-14 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That the companies that made the games intended them to be played in a certain way. Anything lower than a 'normal/medium' setting for the game removes too much of the risk/danger and completely changes the way a story is told or experienced. Taking an easier option destroys the purity of the creators intended story/experience.

I believe it's perfectly fine for players to choose their own level of difficult if the options are there but I can also see that there may be a point to be made there.

thank you for giving a reasoning with some depth. i disagree that you can find a point being made, it being laden with assumptions about both creator intention and narrative experiences, but it's definitely a justification i can see people really investing in.

OP
Thanks secret maker for this wonderful image choice haha!

It's nice to see so many people playing the same way. Today, I talked an NPC into basically killing himself and while I felt a little bad, it was also hilarious.

Honestly irl DND is much more forgiving than BG3 is because it's down to your DM as to what happens and not an uncaring game-engine, and so long as you have a good DM they won't punish you horribly(without a workaround) for fluffing a roll.

I love BG3 but it's so much harder than regular DnD with my group. xD
