They are... fishmen? They are supposed to be not that pretty in the eyes of humans. So you also think that ugly people should shut up and dissappear? I am jumping to conclusion here, but yeah, it's a good thing that this is a secret

I actually like that they went with these off-putting, non-human designs because it plays well with the slavery and racism we find out about in later parts of the story. It makes the scene at the slave auction where the nobles are glad "the beast" was put down when Hachi is shot even more chilling.
