Making Usopp's entire intro/character arc about Zoro and Luffy. Usopp was not even given a passing chance to show his bravery and introduce him as the coward who steps up when it counts, he just lurked in the background the whole time. As my partner said, Usopp wasn't even the star of his own goddamn backstory.

I was like ah, I see, character traits and development be damned. I'm out.

I mean. The only character who've got full arc was Nami basically and Usopp have got to shine later. But you do you

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
....... but he does that in episode 4.

I wouldn't say Usopp had character development in Syrup village either, tbh. We just saw what his character was, which is brave when it counts. Which we did see in ep4 and then later in the fight against Chuu in the live action, same as the original.

Usopp's character arcs only really start in the Grand Line with Little Garden.

I mean Usopp didn't have character development in the original Syrup village arc in the manga/anime, either.

Yes! Exactly. Usopp has more slow character development because he isn't as strong as others at the start of his arc. Because overcoming fear and getting stronger is a along journey. Still he has his moments in the show

People who complain that he's been short-changed in the show confuse me though. He's very charming and likeable, a lot more palatable than in the original at this time, he had a sweet romance with Kaya and he had that moment of choosing to be brave rather than ran away when he stayed with Kaya after she told him to leave. The important character beats are all there, just packaged differently, the same as all the other characters.

For East Blue, I think the way they handled him is fine.

Ha, there was a whole paragraph in the beginning where I agreed with you that I deleted. I just realised that without that paragraph my reply reads as though I'm arguing with you, which I'm not! I completely agree.

(writing in a chance that you'll see it)
I get you!
Also OPLA characters are all much more charming and better people from the start, probably because live series do not have luxury of going on and on as manga does.

They're definitely all more charming! Which was a good call as the intensity of the original characters is just too much for a live action show.

I like watching reaction channels and it has been entertaining seeing people who first saw the LA then start watching the anime see the differences in the characters. Like, original Luffy is a lot more selfish and brutally honest than in the show and it does throw people off on the beginning when they're only used to the more adorable LA version.
