(Anonymous) 2023-10-14 08:31 am (UTC)(link)OTOH, if what you’re wishing to escape from is flimsy, poorly-written, pandering representation, because some room full of suits somewhere has heard it’s what sells these days, then honestly I get it.
I’m pretty sensitive to anything that feelings like pandering, and it puts me off big time, even when--hell especially when--I’m in the group that’s being pandered to. And there truly is a lot of it in popular media these days. I’m usually okay at shrugging off stuff that feels like it’s pandering to a group that I’m not in. I do my best to remember that there were undoubtedly people who were happy with the representation and leave it at that. But do I, in the privacy of my own living room, sometimes heave an exasperated sigh and roll my eyes at yet another piece of media that feels like the writers spent twice as much time coming up with ways to seem woke than they spent actually crafting a solidly written story? Yes, yup, I absolutely do that sometimes.
But then other times there’ll be a fantastic story that has diversity all over the damn place and is all the better for it, because good writing is like that. Good writing knows how to add ingredients to the pot in a way that builds harmoniously on the dish that’s being made. Bad writing is the problem. Bad writing thinks it can make a water and carrot soup and then dump a bottle of cinnamon, a bag of peppercorns, and a handful of olives into the pot and rack up those diversity points. Cinnamon, peppercorns, and olives are fucking great ingredients, but that doesn’t make it a good soup.
