So from this secret: you're fatphobic, ableist and other things and want everything white white white and "pure?" No nasty complications or traumas, just flat characters who fit Hollywood Hot because you wanna drool?

(Anonymous) 2023-10-14 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like a very bitter, mean-spirited person.

Not OP, but I love characters with nasty traumas. And I prefer them in a pretty package. Sorry not sorry. If I wanna see bleak, ugly and grim, I'll go outside.

Go call out someone who cares.

“People are people” is the escape, though! Like having the fat guy be whatever character fits the story, instead of always having him be the stupid comic relief or the lazy selfish nobleman.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. I'm tired of seeing a body type I can't help (hello, bedbound disability nuking exercise options) relegating me to comic relief and fart jokes, or my disabilities being played for inspiration porn. :| Give us rounded characters instead of unexisting us.

in a very real way, no. not unless you own a entertainment production entity that can produce it's own works without being concerned about the feeling of the masses, and can only watch that. no, the answer is no.

this isn't even specific to you. it's a no to [nothing existing that does not give us pleasure] for us all.

I usually don’t feed trolls but have nowhere to share this and will only do it Anon:

My regressive spouse was whining about Hogwarts Legacy having a trans character and having “all this woke stuff shoved down my throat.” I pointed out nothing was being shoved down anyone’s throat, inclusion is about it being for more than just straight white dudes and sometimes straight white women with a single token black character for every POC of every race and gender to identify with.

We rarely talk about issues like that because we started in the midsole and then went to opposite ends of the spectrum over the years. We’re both ashamed of each other’s social views and combined with some other ways we’ve grown apart, I honestly think we’ll end up divorced within the next few years. And I’m kinda looking forward to it because I honestly hate people who want all western media to go back to just being about straight white people.

Nah? Just make your own or only read, watch, etc. the thousand of media that only have straight cis white thin characters. Problem solved.

Like... go deep dive some 2000s American series that has a trope like 'omg she's so ugly' about a beautiful woman wearing glasses or whatever and you can daydream your ass away anon.

Well, at least you know you're a jerk.

When someone who is different from you just existing in your field of awareness makes you annoyed, that's a problem that's on you to deal with, not them, or the creator of the entertainment, or anyone else.

Media is more fun when it’s not determined to make you a better person.

I hope you're trolling, but if not, enjoy being annoyed by the existence of, idk, just spitballing here, ~85%+ of the world's population?

I don't even have it in me right now to be pettily smug that my existence and the existence of characters who resemble me in media annoys someone who sounds like they have a shriveled little moldy raisin where their compassion for and curiosity about other people would go, if they had any.

I just wish people like you didn't have so much power to dictate political policy in an effort to get rid of those annoying others who ruin your perfect world by being disabled or not fluent in your language or poor or fat or brown or LGBTQ+ or ugly or whatever your myriad "eww, cooties" criteria are.

I can definitely see why "I pretend like I give a shit about people who aren't hurting anyone by being who they are, but aren't like me, because I don't want to face actual consequences for my bigotry, and in my spare time I hate you so much I like to pretend you don't exist" is a secret, though. Ugh.

I like well-rounded characters (though there are a few shallow ones that I have been a fan of). And it would be nice if all characters with marginalized aspects were well-rounded (hell, it would be nice if all characters were well-rounded), and those marginalized aspects were just a part of them, sometimes focused on, sometimes not. Now, I know there is some media out there where it seems like someone is standing there with a diversity checklist, making sure their characters have enough ticked boxes. But even so, that's an important part of normalization. The more it's out there, the more accepting of it people get (generally, though sometimes there is some real backsliding). So, it's important.

Now, if you just mean you, personally, want to watch media with only thin, rich/comfortable, able-bodied people with no mental health issues, I think there's a lot out there. If you want no people with marginalized aspects at all, well that's a little harder, but I do think there are probably some things out there with only white cishet men within a certain age range.

If you mean you don't want to watch remakes with so-called woke casting, well, then, don't.

Time for anti-fragility!

My response to this secret depends on what you’re actually wishing to escape from. If it’s the existence of characters who are in any way marginalized, then yeah, that really is a pretty shitty way to think about other people.

OTOH, if what you’re wishing to escape from is flimsy, poorly-written, pandering representation, because some room full of suits somewhere has heard it’s what sells these days, then honestly I get it.

I’m pretty sensitive to anything that feelings like pandering, and it puts me off big time, even when--hell especially when--I’m in the group that’s being pandered to. And there truly is a lot of it in popular media these days. I’m usually okay at shrugging off stuff that feels like it’s pandering to a group that I’m not in. I do my best to remember that there were undoubtedly people who were happy with the representation and leave it at that. But do I, in the privacy of my own living room, sometimes heave an exasperated sigh and roll my eyes at yet another piece of media that feels like the writers spent twice as much time coming up with ways to seem woke than they spent actually crafting a solidly written story? Yes, yup, I absolutely do that sometimes.

But then other times there’ll be a fantastic story that has diversity all over the damn place and is all the better for it, because good writing is like that. Good writing knows how to add ingredients to the pot in a way that builds harmoniously on the dish that’s being made. Bad writing is the problem. Bad writing thinks it can make a water and carrot soup and then dump a bottle of cinnamon, a bag of peppercorns, and a handful of olives into the pot and rack up those diversity points. Cinnamon, peppercorns, and olives are fucking great ingredients, but that doesn’t make it a good soup.

Forced representation is annoying. Though I don't remember any movement towards non standard beauty. It's all the same make up for the girls on the screen.

I'm watching Grace and Frankie and the couple's kids still manage to look very uninteresting. Also that black kid feels forced because the rest of the family is white and his issues are never addressed. The older crowd looks pretty interesting though and the fact that two ex husbands are gay doesn't feel forced.

As a fat, disabled, poor, mentally ill, marginalized person, I kind of get it, but...boooring!
