Also, the genre is popular for a reason— many people enjoy stories about school. Your story doesn't have to break every convention of the genre to be good, those conventions are beloved by fans. Of course your story should be original and not directly copy another series, but you shouldn't worry too much about making it completely different than every other book with a magic school to the point of blocking yourself from concepts that you want to use in your story and will obviously be putting your own spin on.

yeah def. I wanna keep in mind the thing that appeals me to the genre . TBH i draw JUST as much inspiration from an HP fanfic series called Alexandra Quick because tbh some things it does just as good or even better , imo, than HP.

I also drew a teensy bit of inspiration from the trainer school in the latest Pokemon games with the projects they have in the game that allow for exploration beyond the school

I recall what my brother said about the first Fantastic Beasts movie that he liked it better than the main series because it showed the way the society worked outside the school and in some of the later series I'd like to use that to keep things interesting.

Just think, how many "magic school" series can you name off the top of your head? How many come up if you do a quick search online? They may share common elements but they aren't the same story because the authors have their own unique perspectives and ways of handling the premise. They have different plots, different characters, different styles. Your story will be compared to others, but that's okay. It's part of writing a new entry in a popular genre. It's impossible *not* to be inspired by what exists. Your story will also have your own touch that only you can bring. If that's the project you're excited to work on, go for it!
