Anyone who thinks the Imperium of Man are the good guys seems to be missing the point. 40K doesn't have good guys. The Imperium may think they're good, but they're racist nitwits. The Tau are maybe trying to be, but they're creepy too. The Orks have as much claim to be the good guys!

I thought your Controversial Take was the commonly accepted one in the SCP fandom?

There’s a lot of pushback, actually. “Cold, not cruel” is the standard phrase.

At least in the Kondraki era they knew they were freewheeling trash.

I read Horus Rising. I loved the novel, and it also made me realize the Corpse Emperor was responsible for every bit of the inefficient and doomed dystopia humanity is ruled by. It's the reason I'm furiously devoted to giving any silly name possibly to the dog-hearted bastard.

Apparently, it's a bigger problem that GW makes 90% Imperium POVs, which doesn't go into explaining the philosophies of Chaos worshippers to make them sympathetic as well, or even the aliens. I'm well aware every single faction in that universe are monstrous, but when you push a faction so much you treat them as the good guys, this is what can happen.

Either way, I very much share your headcanon, OP.

There’s a quote I tried to find—I think it was on 1d4chan—about how one particular sub-faction of Chaos is more fun to read about than the others, because they have coherent motivations. They’re evil, but they don’t do things solely out of religious zealotry, or just to hurt people for the sake of hurting them. (I can’t find the quote, so I’m not sure who this was referencing.)

Probably Tzeentch, whose thing is having plans upon plans within plans, often countering his own plans in service of a greater plan.
