I hear you, OP. I'm not a big fan of season long arcs because they just feel overdone and dragged out to me, and because they often focus on a ridiculous supervillain type character. I prefer shows that are bit episodic in nature, generally speaking. A theme or something that ties the episodes together are fine, but again, I prefer a light hand with that. A good example: Pokerface.

There is one exception to this rule and that's Fringe. Their monster of the week stories were often weak and their mytharc was great (until the last 1.5 seasons by which stage it was all crap.)

I think it depends on the type of show, and on how it's done. Shows that are meant to be open-ended, and to run as long as TPTB can keep them going, benefit strongly from being episodic. Attempts at long arcs in those types of shows lead to continuity errors, constantly escalating stakes, and disappointing resolutions (looking at you, X-Files).

On the other hand, shows with planned, limited (or fairly limited) runs can do fantastic things with long arcs. A show like 'Breaking Bad' does not work as purely episodic fiction.

You know what show succeeded masterfully at balancing the two, though? Farscape. The three-part episodes were fucking legendary! And the overarching storylines were woven so well into the "adventure of the week" episodes. I think the writers of that show recognized something that many others don't: standalones allow for character- and relationship-building in a way that arcs often don't.

Fucking co-signed. I thought I was entering into a depression or my ADD was spiralling. It took my two years to figure out that nope, tv shows pretty much suck now because they only have 1-4 minutes of story per episode.

I'm fine with season arcs if they're a) primarily character-based (i.e. "this character has A Thing that's going to Become Relevant in the finale, let's tease and have them work through it all season) and/or b) just tiny little glimpses in each episode to tease the big finale that's gonna happen. Anything more involved than that plot-wise I kind of tap out.

I liked the mix of both on SPN but mostly because it felt like they did character work with the MOTW episodes, so they didn't have to do so much character work with the season arc episodes, which is when it doesn't work for me.

If done right, you see the season/series long arc while enjoying the episodic episodes.

I think a show that does this so well is Mad Men.

I'm surprised no one has brought up Buffy yet. That show was the absolute master of balancing killer MOTW episodes with season long Big Bad/End-of-the-World arcs. Seasons 2, 3 & 5 are perfection.

Perhaps a result of all the "monster of the week" bashing shows like Smallville got when it aired. People demanding more 'character development' or involved plots. Now everything has to build on previous episodes and you rarely get a nice standalone episode to rewatch without something terrible happening.

Anyone who thinks the Imperium of Man are the good guys seems to be missing the point. 40K doesn't have good guys. The Imperium may think they're good, but they're racist nitwits. The Tau are maybe trying to be, but they're creepy too. The Orks have as much claim to be the good guys!

A while back, I was reading something about how the kind of protagonist trans women eat up like candy is the exact opposite of insulting trans stereotypes. I got to thinking about what would be the opposite of insulting black stereotypes, and I realized I was just describing Black Panther. I mean, where else do you see a national leader who’s also a brilliant scientist?

(Okay, technically that’s also Princess Bubblegum, but she’s a): pink and b): apparently some kind of war criminal according to the arguments on Tumblr.)

Anime/manga isn't really my thing, but from what I've gathered, aren't yandere, like, possessively, obsessively, violently devoted? And I would think that sometimes tsundere are the target of that devotion.

Taking sick days

Do you feel guilty when you take a sick day? Wednesday in my busiest work day. But I woke up this morning so nauseous I couldn't walk without gagging. So I called in but then spent the moments when I was awake feeling guilty about all the work I was missing and would have to catch up on.
