Do you prefer overarching plots or "monster of the week" shows?

I prefer a mix of both. It really just depends on the show.

Doctor Who and Babylon 5 both have a great mix of both, though B5 leans more towards arching plot and Who leans more towards single episode plots. But both mix both types fairly well.

Some shows work best with only one or the other. But for the most part I think a mix is best.

In general I prefer episodic shows just because they tend to get more space for characterization. The shows that try to shove plot within plot within plot and end each episode on a cliffhanger get pretty boring when I don't give a shit about the characters because they're not developed.

X-Files MotW episodes were always my favorites.

It seems not to be a popular opinion in fandom, but I prefer arcs actually. Just a lot of episodic shows do not do them properly. So they are better as monster of the week type of stuff. But anyway I tried so hard to enjoy episodic shows people rave about. And they. Annoy. The living. Fuck. Of me. Probably I only liked Poker Face in recent media, because it was short enough not to get too repetitive.

Freak of the week, all the way baby. Arcs never deliver, and two parters are all set up and no resolve.

I prefer one with an overarching plot but I think both themes are very YMMV
