Both are very different. Knitting uses 2 needles and many stitches on the needle at a time. Crochet uses 1 hook and usually only 1 stitch on the hook at a time. I prefer the look and feel of the 'fabric' you get from knitting but I find crochet to be a lot more adaptable and quicker to work up.

There are many great YouTube tutorials if you want to see what the difference is. If your local thrift store has a craft section that's a great place for finding cheap needles, hooks, and yarn. That way you can try one or both without too much cost.
