If you're actually wondering about details... (not OP)

(Anonymous) 2023-11-12 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Like I said, I'm not the OP, but here's my recent experience, and it's possible OP had something similar happen in their fandoms once. I unfollowed several mainly-fandom accounts that I'd been following for years, because in the past month those accounts all rapidly reversed their stance on letting people take breaks from the awfulness of the world and on not guilt tripping anyone for taking those breaks. Accounts that an exact month ago had literally posted reminders that it's ok and good to say you're not informed enough to have an opinion on Political Issue instead of forcing yourself to take one, are now sharing posts about how that is propaganda designed to keep you uninformed, and it's your duty to educate yourself. Accounts that used to post like clockwork around election times that you must choose the lesser evil candidate or the greater evil will win, are now saying "we" are not voting for anyone in any party who doesn't explicitly support condemn Israel and support Palestine. (Which, hah, that's like maybe ten people out of hundreds, so cool excuse to slack on voting, guys.) And now their entire accounts are at least half shit like that and memes about Palestine that don't actually give any concrete advice to help, it's just so we will remember how awful things are because we're not allowed to forget for a second anymore.

That is politics in fandom, and that is what made me unfollow fandom accounts en masse. Not "black people existing."

Ah. Yeah, my tumblr dash has suddenly gotten pretty bad in this exact way lately.

I really gotta make a policy to unfollow people faster when they start to spread rage and hostility. I'm too willing to let things slide even when I have no reason to expect it won't just happen again tomorrow.

NAYRT
Oh yeah, same, I blocked tags for now but I think I should start unfollowing.

Oof. That is definitely a bright red line that should never be crossed, in my opinion, regardless of the issue at hand. It ignores two important realities: that really learning and understanding a Political Issue takes time (and yes, some level of skill), and that it's impossible to know every little thing about every single issue because there's simply too much information to absorb in one person's lifetime. There are other aspects to keeping up with Political Issues/the news as well, such as weeding out mis/disinformation and the fact that this is truly a lifelong learning process. I am so tempted to say that age might be playing a role in these realities being ignored in these fandom spaces, but then I'd be falling into an ageism trap. If there's anything I've learned in the last few years, it's that age ain't nothin' but a number when it comes to binary thinking about both Political Issues and engaging with the news as a whole.

I think the wishy-washiness would annoy the shit out of me more than anything else. Which would just make me think it was a troll that somehow targeted my fandom. It would get blocked.

I think that when a person learns more about an issue, they should rethink their opinion on it and decide whether or not they hold the same view. Growth and change and all that. But constantly going back and forth on whether or not voting is important? just because of who the candidates are? just makes me think the person posting is a privileged moron or a troll.

While the argument can be made that these are not mutually exclusive, I'd put my money on the privileged moron angle. I've found an increasing number of them online, and they aren't necessarily trolling.
