Eh there's a difference between stories that involve an emotionally abusive parent as a minor character within a larger plot and stories that are special after school messages all about a parent-child relationship about how emotionally abusive parents are bad.

I don't know where OP's line is but "you don't like one so you must not like the other, huh!" is a weird thing to jump to

OP jumps to assuming a book with a black person on the cover is going to be a message-y racism-themed book, I don't think it's too big a leap to wonder if they're more uncomfortable with racism (even if it's a background element) than other real-world themes.

Maybe, sure? But them not wanting a messagey-plot about racism doesn't mean they "instantly stop reading" if racism is touched on, is what I'm saying

I'm not commenting on the cover thing, just that wanting to avoid message plots isn't the same as clutching pearls and dropping books at the very mention of something in passing

Sure, maybe. They instantly get deterred from books by the cover, which was the point of the secret, which does raise some questions about how they may react to racism in fiction and other real-world elements.

Kinda. They get deterred specifically because they suspect a message fic lurks behind the cover, and their aversion to message plots in general is clearly greater than their desire to risk it and read it

This doesn't say how they react if they run across peripheral racism in other non-message plot, adventure-focused stories though, so it seems exaggerated to suggest they only want "books for babies" as though only childrens media or message plots exist

^ This. I don't mind conflicts that are part of the larger story, but I don't want to read a book where the predominant theme is The Conflict. The difference is huge.

But honestly, I assumed that ayrt was one of those "arguing in bad faith" commenters that plague FS.
