So true. Same for fat characters or characters with a disability. Just make them normal characters in a story.

I like diverse fiction but I don't like messagey fiction. I'll read nonfiction for that.

Why is it always "messagey" when people write their experiences and not the white cishet experience...

Not everyone has those experiences, though.

Like, as a queer person, I can't relate at all to stories about queer angst because when I came out to my parents, my mom's response was "Okay, if you get a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend we're still expecting you to bring her home for Thanskgiving." Some of us would like to read stories like that, where being queer/fat/disabled/POC isn't a source of angst.
