yeah i would watch this, especially if they make it clear that half of the title faults do in fact correspond to lizzy, and both her parents are terrible. the two movies never managed this for me.

Hmmm. I'm only familiar with the 1995 miniseries and I sort of see what you mean. For me, both those elements were there, but subtle. Elizabeth acknowledges several times (to Jane mostly, since only Jane was privy to the details) that she was too quick to trust Wickham and his good-seeming appearance, and quick to go against Darcy because he slighted her at the ball and seemed very haughty and arrogant as well.

Likewise, it does touch upon Mr. Bennet's failure to provide for his wife and daughters by setting aside money, and his behavior is brought up in a flashback when Darcy writes negatively about the crass behavior of Elizabeth's family. But Mrs. Bennet is such a larger than life character that Mr. Bennet's flaws are easily overshadowed, I agree.

yeah, i think my issue comes from the fact that the narrative voice makes you aware of this, though it does require a bit of a close read, before lizzy realizes it. but i think its pretty tough to get a wry third person perspective visually, so i may be asking too much.

I think there's just... such a lot going on, that it's hard to fit everything in. Especially because with Mr. Bennet, part of understanding what he did wrong is very much buried in the context of how laws of inheritance worked in those times. The adaptation already has to quickly explain entails, but it's more complicated than that - the fact that the Bennet family's income is fine while Mr. B lives, but after he dies his widow and daughters will be left with very little AND the estate goes to Mr. Collins. And that Mr. B should've prepared for this eventuality by setting aside money to add to Mrs. B's jointure and his daughters' dowries, but... he didn't. Because he was gambling on having a son to break the entailment, and kept having daughters instead which meant what little money there was has to be divided into smaller and smaller portions.

As a result, and because he doesn't particularly admire or respect his wife and most of hid kids, he's checked out of the whole family thing and isn't doing his part to act as a disciplinarian to Kitty and Lydia, and he's not exactly doing Mary any favors, either. Meanwhile, Mrs. Bennet's flaws are a lot more in-your-face because she's the comic relief and you're meant to laugh at her absurdities, so it's easy to miss Mr. Bennet flying under the radar and not being a very good parent or husband.

I'm a bit more forgiving of going easy on Elizabeth, just because Wickham is/i> supposed to be amiable and charming, and his volubility and willingness to make friends puts Darcy at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to people believing Wickham is good and Darcy isn't. I think there's a scene in the 1995 miniseries where Lizzy says that one "has the appearance of goodness", but she came to realize that the genuinely good person is the one who might not initially seem so because of his standoffishness and rudeness.

Gosh, look at me and my book nerd side coming out! I've got to go to bed, but it's been nice chatting with you. :)

>its pretty tough to get a wry third person perspective visually

2020's Emma's servants did exactly that. Having them act as both comedic relief and Greek chorus was inspired. Something similar could work here, too.

i wonder how that would work in P&P since Meryton and Lizzie have the same prejudices lol.
