God this has been a mood.
I had been so active on LJ back in the 2000s and only stopped when pretty much all the fan comms I had been following suddenly stopped dead and hopped over to Tumblr (then when the TOS changed I deleted my account).
Tumblr has been my go-to ever since, and even though I post a lot of fanart on my side-accounts I haven't been communicating all that much in the ten years I've been on that site.

In fact the last fandom I was REALLY active in was the fan groups on Deviantart around 2016 with the gaming side of the fandom on there. Not only posting art, but pre-eclipse update it was a lot easier to leave comments and had discussions on there - in addition to looking through old fan art via categories and fan group galleries that kept out the fetish/porn art. However, DA has disintegrated both functionally and with whatever shit of the week they've come up with to worsen the site.
Pillowfort had seemed promising at the start, but after a few times I hadn't been able to log in due to some site glitches - I had left it alone and forgot about it for half a year. The last few times I've logged in, it seems like everything had turned into the fetish side of DA while I was away and most of the fan comms I was following had stopped dead. IDK I'd like to give it another try but it doesn't seem like its going to last long either.

I do try to update my main journal here on DW and have tried to participate in communities on here when they do update - but I'm definitely finding it harder to socialize than I did when I was younger.

I don't think it's rose-colored glasses. I think the heyday of LJ (and of old-style message boards) was different. Conversations were more in-depth and flowed more easily, and that's largely due to the format.

Twitter is fast, but the character limit truncates conversation (the fact that there's a whole separate website to stitch together long-form ruminations on Twitter in order to make them more readable is incredibly telling) and also incentivizes outrage/drama: shorter posts involve less reflection, and leave more room for misinterpretation.

Tumblr allows for long posts, so depth and reflection are possible. But comments have a character limit, and many people either shut them off or limit them to mutuals; and reblog conversations, by their nature, wind up being more one-on-ones than the type of communal discussions that a true forum encourages. If you're not the OP, it's hard to keep track of reblogs, let alone engage meaningfully with more than a tiny fraction of them. And now that the social morés there have shifted from "add your own commentary to the body of your reblogs" to "keep your commentary in your tags; it's gauche to add it to the body of your reblogs," well, the conversation has gotten even more stilted.

There are Discord servers for a lot of things now, but a Discord server is fundamentally a chat room, so even though it lacks some of the limitations of Twitter or Tumblr, the pace is still not at all like that of LJ and the old forums. It encourages rapid rather than considered thought, which affects the kind of conversations that can be had.

But, yeah, this place is still here. Some people are still hanging around in these old spaces. Things changed, though. That's how it goes.

I've found that I've gotten the most out of fandom in the new era by cultivating friendships with individual people, and having ongoing conversations with them outside of the main platforms. You say you mainly lurk and you're not as social as you used to be, but I still thought I'd put it out there. I'm also not as social as I used to be, and having just a few people I interact with regularly works for my brain better than trying to keep up with a whole crowd.

100% mood.

I joined PillowFort recently hoping it would be a hub of activity but most of the communities I checked out were filled with tumbleweeds and there was dust gathering in the corners. Even here on dreamwidth is like that with a lot of communities that fit my interests. It's like there are people on all different platforms but not enough of anyone anywhere to make it exciting and fun again.

One of the writers said it was canon? Thats news to me. I remember them being very supportive if the idea and loving the subtext but never saying it was canon. But its been awhile since I've been involved in that fandom at all so I may be misremembering.

Either way it is a fun show, sorry you were set up for disappointment. The sequal/continuation show is even better imo.

Sex

Why is it the only thing that people want, but will punish someone for giving it to them?

If a homeless person asks you for money, and you give them money, you lose a little bit of money. And you chose to give it to someone. But the homeless person will usually thank you instead of turning around and yelling, HAHA SUCKER I GOT A DOLLAR AND YOU LOST ONE!!!

Same if you give someone a gift that you chose to spend money on. Or you put time and money into helping someone. They don't laugh at you and argue that you deserve to be abused because you willingly gave up money or time and energy.

But if someone wants sex, and they get it, that's a valid reason to mistreat the person they had sex with for being 'easy' or whatever. Like, if the person you have sex with didn't want a relationship, and used birth control to avoid pregnancy and STIs, they didn't 'lose' anything... but you can decide to start treating them badly to MAKE it into a loss for them, and argue that they deserve the bad treatment because they chose to have sex.

And before someone starts with the 'make better choices,' 'haha you're just mad you got taken advantage of, take accountability' I'm literally a virgin. I'm going off what I see.
