it feels like "straight guy showrunner wanted to support gay audience and does so with no knowledge of what he's saying" rather than any actual commentary on the characters.

Yeah, agreed. It actually really bugs me, because I remember him mentioning Sophie/Parker femslashers back during the original Leverage show, so when he confirmed the existence of the OT3 I thought he knew what he was talking about. And instead it turns out that he meant that Hardison, Parker, and Eliot have a very strong friendship, and those of us fans who wanted not just friendship, but also romantic and sexual ties among all three characters, are just SOL.
