Well, you also have to keep in mind that most anime is for teenagers, not for adults. Same goes for manga. Shounen manga (for male teenagers) sells double the amount of seinen manga (for young male adults). Most adults in Japan just don't watch anime at all, they prefer drama series and movies with real people.
