TBH the whole stink around fandom about Finn being The Most Mistreated Character Ever strikes me as somewhat misogynistic. Of all the black characters who could have been treated better (and there are MANY), the one fandom chose to make this big a deal about is the guy who had the spotlight "stolen" by the first female main character in the main Star Wars continuity. I don't think everyone who participates in the "Finn deserved better" fight is doing it for that reason, but I do think a lot of it got fueled by dudes who just hated that Rey was a girl and knew they could get their woke enemies on their side by framing it as "look at how racist the black guy was treated."

I have seen what you described over and over again on Twitter and Reddit. But there also was the misdirection of Finn holding a lightsaber in the promos for TFA, which was not a well thought out marketing strategy.

Really? I loved Rey. I thought it was Poe who should have been scaled back to make room for Finn.

By attributing this phenomenon to dudes, I think you're giving female Star Wars fans too much credit. In my experience, there's nothing a female SW fan loves more than finding a reason why a female SW character is trash and should be shunted aside in favor of a man. The fact that leading male characters have been either men of color or Latino in recent years has only added fuel to their fire, because now they can say, "it's racist that some of the story revolves around this bitch that I am jealous of hate."

Ohhh, I've seen that too.
