That is how I got into Sailor Moon fandom too, loved the fic long before the cartoon made its way to my country (in the pretorrent/youtube times), and... I prefer the fic versions better.

I'm also currently reading fic for a show I haven't watched. High five of kinship, OP!

I know from clips and show reviews on YouTube that it's probably not worth watching the show though. Or at least not the whole show, one storyline seems to universally regarded as great. Maybe I'll check that out one in full at some time.

Incidentally, if anyone has recs for Teen Wolf fics focusing on Stiles and the Sheriff, before or after the Sheriff finds out about the werewolves, I'd be very interested. I don't mind Sterek, but I find the relationship between Stiles and his dad way more interesting (talk about doing fandom wrong, lol).

I did this with old Sentinel fic (mostly crossover and fusions). I got into the tropes so decided to check out the source and noped right out. Kind of an asshole thing to admit but I just found both leads so unattractive (and bad acting) I just couldn't.

I've done this before a few times, and every time I have I've never actually ended up liking the media in question or the characters because honestly?... The fic characters are rarely anything like the canon counterparts so I don't end up liking them. xD

I avoid doing fandom this way these days, or if I do I just steer clear of the source material entirely.

I haven’t been in that many fandoms, but I know two things: every single My Hero Academia fic finds a way to get rid of or neutralize Mineta, and every single Big Hero 6 fic finds a way to keep Tadashi around.

Nicest I’ve ever seen a fic been to Mineta: the teachers investigated him being “hypersexual with no known cause,” and then his aunt went to prison and he started on the road to getting better. It’s an elegant approach to a one-note character.

I hated him SOOO much my first time through the show. The second time around, however, I began to realize he's useful as a character who says all the things 'real heroes' and characters you're meant to like more should never say, but that the writers wanted said. For instance, most of the female characters are drawn over-the-top big-breasted with highly revealing costumes, and uh, this is not an accident, obvs, so just in case you missed that yes, even Froppy is drawn to whack off to, Mineta will be there to point out that even she has sizable boobs. Or if something terrifying is happening and it would be unseemly for any of our beloved heroes-in-training to exhibit cowardice, Mineta is there to show that it is indeed a far more terrifying situation than our heroes let on, and any lesser being would be pissing themselves. He's still a piece of shit, but realizing all this made him easier to tolerate for me.

Idk I kinda like the b!s part because nobody is the villain of their own narrative. Realistically, if the story were told from what is conventionally the villain's POV, the hero would be villainized. Since history is written by the victor, and heroes are almost always the victorious party in the stories told about them, there's probably a lot about their telling of events that is heavily skewed, or simply untrue. So I think this flavour of retelling is neat.
