Do You Re-Read Old Fics?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there fics from years ago, or even from an entirely different fandom you're no longer into - that you re-read? Do You have one saved that you always come back to?

Or do you just try to find something new to read instead?

Re: Do You Re-Read Old Fics?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely, yes. Are there people who *don't* reread past favourites?

Yes. There are some fics I've read 5+ times. Usually when I am looking for a particular itch to be scratched.

Re: Do You Re-Read Old Fics?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup.

I have some folders on my PC sorted by fandom and ship where I save the fic I really, really love in order to re-read. It's not a lot, just the ones that I felt were good or scratched an itch. I like reading new fic too, but sometimes I just want a quick comfort read with a pair of characters I love and a story I know.

Re: Do You Re-Read Old Fics?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely reread fic (and books)! That's the only reason I bookmark fic on ao3 and I have like 300 bookmarks. Some I reread once a year, some I won't go back to for years.

But I am also always in search of new fic to enjoy and hit those cravings.

sure! not doing that to me is like never watching a TV show you like again or listening to music you like again.

Re: Do You Re-Read Old Fics?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-26 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. I'm in enough fandoms that even with the more quiet ones I always have something fresh to read. The only fics I have saved are WIPs and once the final chapter is posted I remove them.

I feel like this is a hard question, because the character I liked the absolute least is probably in some book I disliked so much I stopped reading it and forgot about it.

Worst I can remember is the government goon who’s a love interest in the Species Imperative series. The author seems to have this hard-on for authoritarian governments that censor knowledge and disappear citizens “for the greater good,” and it usually stays in the background because it’s tangential to the story being told, but the boyfriend is so involved in that shit that it’s impossible to separate from his character, and all is forgiven because he’s hot.

P.S. This would be a “we have this thread every week,” but the place we have it every week is Spacebattles. So many threads derail into “this character sucks and here’s why.

Momonuske in One Piece. I know he's only eight years old, but boy, is everything about his character a miss for me. The fact that I don't really like his father either doesn't help.

Also, we have seen a lot of kids in One Piece thanks to the flashbacks, and not one of them has been as obnoxious as Momo. The problem is Momonuske, not his age (which is the most common defense of his character that I have seen).

I hated (and still hate) Gwen Cooper so much I stopped watching Torchwood.

As for least favorite, with an emphasis on favorite, I would have to say Pete Saengtham. He was further up the list, but all the crap with the actor and fans trying to defend his shitty behavior made me start disliking the character more. I still like Pete, just not as much as I did before all the scandals. I prefer Arm or Job more, now.

The Ricky Gervais parody character in Upstart Crow. I don't even find Ricky Gervais funny to begin with and the guy sticks out like a sore thumb in the entire show for the sake of a cheap gag they keep using throughout the 3 series.

There are a lot of characters who simply aren't my cup of tea, but I think Joel from The Last of Us really takes the cake for me realizing he was terrible, realizing that this was intentional and very much part of the writing, yet being drowned in a sea of people who completely missed the point of his character being terrible in the original game who then became frothingly outraged that he was portrayed to be, you know, as terrible as he always was in the sequel.

Which is to say I guess that Joel was an extremely effective character for what he was supposed to be and I for one welcomed the Joel-in-One in TLOU2 even if nobody else did lmao.

On staying together after the adventure is over

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This came up a little while back, and it's been weighing on my mind.

According to one point of view, it's unhealthy for a group of people to stay together all their lives. To the extent that these people become codependent, eschewing other experiences, relationships, or opportunities in the name of pleasing their companions, I can see how that might be so. However, I wonder if this POV might be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and might be the product of a culture that prioritizes work and production over connection.

It's true that we often form relationships with people who are meant to be with us "for a season," and that our ties to them are made no less meaningful by the fact that they are fleeting. It's also true that we form relationships with people who are meant to be steady but distant connections, with whom we can regroup after long periods of relative silence without the bond taking a hit. However, we are fundamentally social creatures. We thrive on community. We thrive when we have strong connections to people who are physically close to us, who we see on a regular basis. We thrive, especially, when there are many of them.

A lot of discussion mentions "lives." We must go forth and live our lives, and this is a big part of why we can't stay together after the adventure. This is a big part of why "friends" are people who see one another a handful of times a year. But what does "life" mean, in this case? Why is it assumed that our lives do not include our friends? "Life" is now work life, and family life -- and family life is ultimately still about work, is it not? What it is that you're supposed to strive for, if you have a child? Making that child productive, i.e. making sure they're able to get a good job. That's what good modern parenting is: buying all the right "educational" products; putting them in all the right extracurriculars; curtailing their social lives in all the right ways so that they'll "succeed," and have...comfortable lives punctuated by crippling loneliness.

Well. What if the cure for that loneliness, and the cure for much of what ails us, is having people we stay with? Having people we see regularly? Having people who are part of our lives, rather than people we see despite our lives? What if we were to accept that we are social animals, and make our bonds the center of it all? I am unconvinced that this would be unhealthy. I am convinced, however, that it would undermine a system that views us as fodder for the machine; as tools more so than as sentient beings. A system that finds meaning only in endless production and consumption.

Re: On staying together after the adventure is over

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I understand, our brains developed in a living situation where we'd spend almost our entire lives with the same 50-150 people. Modern life doesn't exactly fit that description, so it's no surprise so many people are desperately lonely and fantasize about becoming part of a lifelong group.
