Do You Re-Read Old Fics?

(Anonymous) 2023-11-25 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there fics from years ago, or even from an entirely different fandom you're no longer into - that you re-read? Do You have one saved that you always come back to?

Or do you just try to find something new to read instead?

Absolutely, yes. Are there people who *don't* reread past favourites?

I don't reread books I love but I reread fics I love. I've always found that weird. Especially since some of the fics are as long as a book.

It was so wild to me when I found out people don't reread favorite books. The only reason I own books is so that I can revisit them when the mood strikes. Apparently some people just like to own books but they are one and done woth regards to actually reading them. Wild.

The only book I've read multiple times is World War Z. I think because with books and fanfics I only want to read my favorite passages when I reread them again. So, with fanfics I skim the stuff I am not interested in. Wish WWZ, I read my favorite individual stories.

I think I get it with books because books are usually longer, so not wanting to reread the whole thing makes sense.

With fics I find I usually forget a lot of details after a while due to the amount of fic I read, which also makes fics for the same fandom and pairing blur together after a while. So rereading fic becomes worthwhile after a comparatively short time.

That is wild to me as well. Books you never intend to reread seem like such a waste of space to me! But I'm a big re-reader.

That's why I boxed or got rid of all my physical books. The only ones I keep now are gifts or have sentimental value.

I'm sort of that. There are fics that I do reread, but its a very select few and I go back to them every once in a long time.
I think its more to do with whether or not I'm fixated on a new fandom. I tend to do the rereading when I'm between fandoms or starting to lose interest.

Yes. There are some fics I've read 5+ times. Usually when I am looking for a particular itch to be scratched.

Yup.

I have some folders on my PC sorted by fandom and ship where I save the fic I really, really love in order to re-read. It's not a lot, just the ones that I felt were good or scratched an itch. I like reading new fic too, but sometimes I just want a quick comfort read with a pair of characters I love and a story I know.

Absolutely reread fic (and books)! That's the only reason I bookmark fic on ao3 and I have like 300 bookmarks. Some I reread once a year, some I won't go back to for years.

But I am also always in search of new fic to enjoy and hit those cravings.

I culled my AO3 bookmarks this year to go below 1000 again. I spend like a month just rereading fics and deciding whether or not to keep the bookmark for future rereading. Not gonna lie, deleting bookmarks for stuff that just wasn't that good after all was kind of satisfying.

But like you, there's just some fics that I read at least once a year because I like them that much.

Absolutely. I've got stuff from the 90s saved that I regularly re-read.

sure! not doing that to me is like never watching a TV show you like again or listening to music you like again.

Nope. I'm in enough fandoms that even with the more quiet ones I always have something fresh to read. The only fics I have saved are WIPs and once the final chapter is posted I remove them.
