Only in America

(Anonymous) 2023-11-27 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Came back from Thanksgiving with a cold. Not COVID (multiple negative tests), pretty sure just a bad cold with a slight fever.

Problem is, I'm out of both sick days and vacation days until January. If it were COVID, I'd have to stay home. but with a cold, I don't think I can. I guess I'll just wear a mask? IDK. I feel terrible. At least I'm not in a job where I see a lot of non-coworkers outside of scheduled meetings, and i don't have any of those Monday.

I hate this country. Is anyone from a civilized country willing to adopt me?

DA. Too old to adopt, anyone want to get married and welcome me to your civilized lands?

I'm curious what countries you consider civilized?

Based on the topic of the thread and related practices around the world? A small part of Western Europe and some assorted Commonwealth countries.

AYRT

A country that isn't an oligarchy in a trench coat, that prioritizes the health and well being of it's citizens before profit, that maintains and invests in infrastructure necessary for daily life including not only roads and bridges, but hospitals and schools, etc etc etc.

So an imaginary one?

Sweden, Norway, Finland.

For now. It seems like every time I look elsewhere, people there start thinking that putting fascists and ultra-conservative folks into power is a good idea. I've come to the conclusion that one needs to defend their freedom no matter where they are (unless, of course, life-or-death situation imminent, then I understand fleeing).

Also, Finland has an extremely high cost of living and extremely low job availability. A citizen/permanent resident is unlikely to die on the street but unless you're personally in high demand for a high-paying profession or have a well-off patron*, it's probably not going to be the dream life you're expecting. And you're probably not going to have unlimited paid sick days at the job you can find.

*And let's be honest. You can live well almost anywhere if you have a wealthy benefactor.

Unlikely to die on the streets it so immediately better than the US just for that factor. Already more civilized. Unlikely to die on the streets is already the dream life.

My brother in Destiel, if you have the time, energy and internet to waste bitching about your prospects on fandom secrets, you are also unlikely to die in the street. That said, you could sell your phone and a moderately porny fanfic, buy a plane ticket and throw yourself on the mercy of the Finns if you really wanted to. Granted, if you’re disabled they’ll throw you right back, but at least you’ll have made the effort.

"if you're disabled, they'll throw you right back"

Really? They don't care for disabled legal immigrants?

Sure, instead of wasting money letting me mentally escape from this hellhole, let me waste money to illegally enter another country where they'll deport me right back, but now I'll have lost my job. Sounds like a great idea. Idiot.

SA

But at least I have a cat who knows when I'm not feeling well and settles herself on my belly to make sure I'm okay.

Well you can go to ours. But I reaaallly don't think you want it here. It's a big one to the west (or east) of you. We do have paid by (taxes) government sick days though

I'm sorry. Also live in the US and I'm out of Sick Time. I consider my workplace one of the better places in terms of getting time off, especially when you're sick but damn, it is still not enough.

What really grinds my gears is I get sick easily and I can't control that when I get even a simple cold it'll knock me out for at least 2 FULL weeks (14 days) to recover.
I don't want to take that time off just to lay in bed at home in misery but I sure as FUCK can't work with inflamed lymph nodes either.
Some people might be faking their cold to get a couple more days off but if I call in sick, IT'S BECAUSE I'M SICK!

Some of us unfortunately get sick more than just once or twice a year and 6 sick days sometimes can't even cover 1 time I'm sick

Try taking vit B. Helped me with my chronically sore throat.
