I don't understand why we can't have nuanced discussions on this issue. There just seem to be extremes. On the right there is either pro-Israel no matter what or nasty anti-Semitism (actually sometimes both at the same time). On the left, there is either Israel is always 100% right or Palestinians are always right.

I'm not even saying the right answer is a middle ground. I'd just like some healthy conversations from people with different viewpoints. Which we seem to be able to get at least sometimes for most other issues.

Agreed, but sadly in this day and age nuance is dead. When "can we not kill innocent civilians?" is controversial even when you don't specify the nationality of said innocent civilians, we're all doomed.

I don't think that's a "day and age" thing. People have been finding reasons why it's okay to kill out-group civilians since the dawn of time.

Remember: in the Bible, when God sent His followers to wage war on adherents of other gods, he commanded them to kill them all. He made no distinction between enemy combatants and civilians; between men and women; between adults and children. He wanted them all to be wiped out.

And so it continues to be.

Historically, when a people or country is conquered, the winners get to enjoy it.

Israel goes through several wars for a small patch of land in the middle east, and they still get decades of terror from pissed off sore loser Muslims that have literally 60x the land.

There's my controversial take. Not Jewish, btw. Just tired of these bullshit wars over religion.

Insanely bad take.

The conflict is not fundamentally about religion. Palestinian Muslims have a distinct national identity from other Arabic speaking Muslims. And the right of conquest is not some absolute natural law.

Just objectively bad history.

To call the Muslims sore losers is to imply that Israel won some kind of contest or war. Is it winning if it's just handed to you from colonialists?

Jewish people no matter what color they are, are indigenous to Israel. There are no colonialists.

And that is why there was a massive wave of immigration in the forties, fifties, and sixties, because they were always there.

Context matters though. Absolutely there should be spaces to have nuanced discussions, but not every space will be adequate for that purpose. Like, say, an anon forum about hot takes about movies and books.

If we can't even civilly discuss whether or not Tony Stark was right in Civil War, what makes you think that we can civilly discuss the crisis in the Middle East?

Ffs, people in this comm have trouble civilly discussing the treatment of female characters in fandom. War and geopolitics are right out.

Now I'm curious if there's a correlation between one's side in CA:CW and the Israel/Palestine conflict.

You speak the truth.
F!S is really not the place for this discussion.
I'd be nice though if finding adequate online spaces to have civil discussions were easier to be found. If anyone knows them, please let us know.

Goddamn. Touche. And, honestly, the post should have ended after this.

To be honest, from my point of view, there's just really not much point in talking about it.

Attacks on civilian targets are wrong from either side and should stop as soon as possible. Both Palestinian and Israeli governments are committed to political positions which make any real lasting peace impossible, although the Israeli government is broadly more responsible to the extent that it is more powerful and more responsible for the underlying political situation. And it seems unlikely that any external power can either stop the violence in the near term, or change the political situation in such a way that would make long-term peace possible.

I don't know how much more there is to say, honestly.

This is a perfectly reasonable stance. However, it doesn't lend to Posting About It, and so it must be disregarded.

Nobody on the Left thinks Israel is always right.
