Smoking, or vaping now, being used as visual shorthand for "cool" "edgy" rebel. It is just dumb. Same with gratuitous swearing, it doesn't sound adult or mature. So often it just sounds stilted and forced.

I think the swearing one is more bad writing than a bad trope. If a writer knows when and how to deploy gratuitous swearing, it can be useful in depicting personal horror or even be outright hilarious (Hello, The King's Speech).

Frankly I need examples of gratuitous swearing. Because I always see people complaining about it but it ends up characters being absolutely normal and having normal dialogs that use swearing.
And no one complains about legendary The Wire "fuck" scene

+1. I can't think of any shows where the swearing sounds stilted and forced. I can think of shows where they use a minced oath instead of a swear and it sounded completely out of character and just ruined the whole scene.
