As a kid I came to the conclusion that they were married, but found it strange that they were both guys. Gay people or relationships just weren't talked about back then (related: I feel old).

They're the Odd Couple! As I grew up it was fascinating seeing all the references that I totally hadn't got at the time. I did assume they were married, though, which was weird as I had absolutely no context for that.

They're gay, just like Statler and Waldorf.

I also assumed they were brothers and we just never saw their parents. As a really little kid I think I related to Gordon and Susan being everyone's parents, somehow. Also I related to their squabbles as being like mine with my brother.

Mind you when I started reading about people seeing them as a couple, that made sense as well.

Statler and Waldorf are definitely a couple, too.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-03 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weird. I just saw them as two guys who lived together, but it never occurred to me what their relation might be or that I should care about it. As I got older and people started saying they were gay, I was like, "oh... huh, I guess?"

Like in Star Wars where the Jedi say that something that happened a couple of hundred years ago is forgotten knowledge. That was within Yoda's own goddamn lifespan. His recent lifespan at that.

I’ve seen it argued from the opposite direction—this empire ruled for a thousand years, and nothing notable happened in the meantime?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-02 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh how I feel this! Nothing ruins a world faster for me than an author who thinks a couple hundred years are a super long time. And usually they’re the ones to include long lived races *face!palm*

Societally, a few hundred years is a long period of time. I can see an argument for cultures where the average lifespan is in centuries, but for your average standard-human culture, not so much. Societies change very fast, often to the point of being practically unrecognisable to even one or two generations back.

Warhammer 40k has a huge timescale, although the Horus Heresy only lasted 7 years, I think.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-03 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You wish they’d use a geologic time scale. It’s a million years old, plus or minus 10,000 years, so relatively recent, right? Or it’s 2.5 billion years old, which is old. Most people aren’t comfortable thinking in those types of time scales.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-02 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it had never sold a single ticket, Batgirl would still have been more profitable than The Flash and Blue Beetle combined. They really shitcanned the wrong movie, and I have no idea why.

At least the whole mess with Coyote vs Acme shows they've sorta, kinda, maybe recognized the self harm, even if it is in a backhanded, assbackward, way.

I only saw the movie once, but I feel like there was something innocent or naive about his douchebro-ness, which makes it a bit more attractive than real life douchebro-ness.

heh

bonus bonus points if they turn around and cry about "BNFs" who are contributing fanwork or holiday organizing exchange events or w/e and actually doing work

imo everyone is a random nobody until they start significantly doing something for the fandom, and simply existing and being around chatting and commenting like every other internet random doesn't count

shout out to mods of fandom communities who do nothing, everyone can tell who the active ones are

What was Arcane pitted against?

For live action One Piece I've seen the comparisons to live action Dragonball, Death Note and Cowboy Bebop the most and to be fair, two out of these were genuinely terrible movies. Not just bad adaptations, but bad movies in general. As long as it's not completely over the top shit talking, it would be hard to unfairly trash these two pearls of movie making.

(Although there's also always the dreaded "anime adaptations always suck" because apparently, anime == shonen. There are plenty good adaptations, look outside of your favourite genre before making sweeping statements like that, people.)

What silly tropes drive you crazy?

(Anonymous) 2023-12-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand in haunted house movies/shows where someone is sleeping and a ghost pulls their sheet off. The sleeping person doesn't notice and pulls it back up then it gets jerked off. Why would a ghost even do that? Silly little guys.
