Re: What silly tropes drive you crazy?

Forced conflict through refusing to just come out and say something. Some writers just seem to be unable to write natural sounding conversations, because they need characters to not mention very specific things in order to driver conflict for X amount of episodes. I am so sick of plots that would be wrapped up in minutes if the characters just spoke like normal people, but never are because that is the only way the writer knows how to drag things out.

Yeah, that's the sign of a bad writer.

Romance plots where the "conflict" is some stupid misunderstanding that could be cleared up with a 5 minute conversation.

I don't know. I feel like a lot of people (normal or not) in real life are pretty bad at actually saying what's bothering them or pointing out relevant things.

This. Whenever someone complains about this trope I wonder what perfect alternate universe they're living in where it's normal and easy to just "come out and say something," especially since in the situations being complained about, the "something" has the chance to make the other person mad or ruin their relationship, which is why they don't want to say it to begin with; that's the point.

Yeeep. It's hard to spit it out sometimes and, sometimes, when you try, you STILL wind up talking at cross-purposes to one another and it's just terrible. It can be an annoying trope if done poorly, but that goes for all tropes. As a basic trope though, like, it's soooo common in real life.

+1, if it's well written it's entertaining to see characters struggling with how to talk about something. But it's definitely overused in situations where it doesn't make sense or is only used for drama.

Yeah, X-Files deteriorated into this in the late seasons - we had a drinking game for someone saying "I don't know how to tell you this".
